British teeth are unlike American.

In America we seem to be very concerned about our dental appearance/health. I can't tell if it's a superficial reason or a health reason--I don't see anything wrong with having crooked teeth, since it doesn't affect anyone's health in any way.

For example, the article used the example of Kate Beckinsale who is English. Prior to making it big in Hollywood, she used to have "natural-looking" teeth which were not as bright and straight as they are today. She looks more air brushed than what she used to look like.

I don't know about everyone else, but unnaturally straight or white teeth creeps me out! I'm not saying i like seeing yellow teeth either, but clean and somewhat crooked is totally acceptable. I don't understand why parents spend thousands of dollars on braces--it's not a necessity!

    • My teeth were only very slightly crooked (as an adult) and my dentist told me that this misalignment would wear out my jaw joint and cause a number of different problems long term. This is why my insurance company paid for braces as an adult (to a doctor unaffiliated with the one who recommended it).

      Because it was medically necessary.

Also, misalignment leads to build up of plaque and bacteria, which are proven to lead to heart and respiratory trouble.

I'm not sure why the UK does not treat dental problems as health problems.

Please stop writing articles like this before someone reads it and thinks you know what you are talking about.

    • Crowded teeth (aka crooked teeth) contribute to plaque and tartar build up, which contributes to tooth decay and periodontal disease. Tooth decay and disease lead to the loss of teeth and damage to other oral structures. Crowded teeth also may cause probelms with occlusion and thus may inhibit the needed function of chewing food. This is why braces are so beneficial.
In regards to whitening....eh not so beneficial....actually more damaging to the tooth structure...but esthetics are important to some people.
