Dogs more effective than prozac

Wanna Reduce Stress Ditch the Prozac and get a Pooch

University of British Columbia professor and author Stanley Coren says dogs work better at reducing stress than the antidepressant Prozac.

A recent study published in the journal “Psychosomatic Medicine” found that positive effects produced by dogs included several signs of reduced stress, including lowered blood pressure, slowed heart rate and more relaxed muscles. And those relaxing effects were attained much more rapidly than pills. Having a dog close by reduced stress in as little as five minutes, where prescription medications can take weeks before taking effect.

“The data is absolutely unambiguous,” Coren told Canada.com. “This actually works better than having a loved one next to you.”

Amazingly, research shows that dog owners visit their doctors less often and are more physically active than non-dog owners. And seniors who own dogs are four times less likely to be victims of depression.

“It’s quite an amazing statistic,” said Coren, author of several books on how humans interact with dogs including “How to Speak Dog: Mastering the Art of Dog-Human Communication.”

    • me mum has a fat yorkie - and i mean this dog has a belly that has literally stretched her ribcage to make room - and i'll be all pissed and put that puddle of flesh in my lap and start looking into her eyes ( as they go back into her head ) while stroking her , and i'll call her all the "pet names" i usually do when i'm fucking drunk like "my little jelly bellied chunky monkey ... i love you little monkey" - i swear to god i have been prevented from beating the hell out of some fool because of that dog .

    • I watched something on the science channel where dogs were able to identify people who had cancer from the smell of their urine samples...one dog actually found cancer in one of the samples that was supposed to be a placebo sample. After further research the person found out he had bladder cancer and had it successfully removed due to early detection. I bet he was glad he was in that test study. Cool stuff.

    • Yes, pets can be amazing for therapy, when someone is disabled in any way be it psychologically or physically. It is well known that pets are good for them.

I miss my Giant Alaskan malamute that could pick me up from the floor, if I fell, my kitty that slept on me at night and the both that would stay with me when I was really ill. And I miss my birds that liked to be part of the flock and talk and the cockatoo that would just cuddle for hours. My apartment says no pets.

Now I have 4 genetically modified fish. They are friendly, but don't cuddle.

    • from the previews of Marley & Me, i think a dog would drastically increase my stress to unhealthy levels. what with the jumping out of moving vehicles and stealing my girlfriend's jewelry....none for me, thanks.

    • Now, although too late for most, is a good time to ask ourselves why we didn't try something like getting a dog for its simple forever accepting companionship rather than using a mind altering drug that does nothing but change the balance of the chemicals in your brain to fix you. And of course unless they started testing prozac in the 30's no one really knows what the long term effects are and what pill they'll need next to fix themselves then. This is and should be considered an outrage

    • despite the fact that they are reminiscent of small children in how to take care of a dog, they definitely lower your stress levels. dogs rock.

    • My dogs sense when I'm particulary angry or depressed about something, & take appropriate action, like non-stop kissy-facing until I'm too busy giggling while fending them off . Gets Me out of My self-piying state every time, & They'll not leave Me alone when They want to play, preferably playing fetch outside, or "let's escape from Dad & make Him chase Our rambunctious little butts down"...You wouldn't BELIEVE how fast Mini-Daschunds can run, 'till You've tried to catch them!!!

    • Gargaryun:

Make sure they brush their teeth before they commence with the "kissy-facing" activity.

My dog would nudge me with is nose in my hair mostly (I have had really long hair forever) be that my head, neck, back whatever... sometimes he'd miss and nudge my face and I'd freak. lol
      Nannuq probably laughed.
