In fact, every year, millions of Britons are given medicine that’s completely unnecessary or inappropriate.Quite apart from the huge waste this ­represents for the NHS (conservatively ­estimated at £400 million a year), these drugs can have harmful, even fatal side-effects — something the family of Mary McIlgorm, an 83-year-old from Barrow-in-Furness, in ­Cumbria, learned too late.
