    • My sister is part of the Teach For America program.....

and I believe she loves it, it required her to move to North Carolina, from Florida, after she was accepted during her graduation at the University of Florida. I heard from her that for the first two years, she gets a bonus of $4,000 a year for school related expenses, on top of whatever her regular salary is. Enyet for Christmas she wanted: a computer projector, paper, pens, pencils, and a few other odds and ends.

My sister is also attending college in North Carolina, going towards some sort of law degree while also participating in the TFA program.
She has mentioned a few things about her students, as to their behavior, to my understanding the school is kind of rough, probably in one of the low tiers of achievement, which is kind of hard for a new teacher to work with.

It's an interesting program, I hope that with the current shortage of teachers, the program could provide a better education in the future, but currently, since I believe it is a new program I don't think it's completely functional yet, but it's a good start.

Is Teach for America good for its teachers, classrooms, schools, students and indeed our country as a whole? Show and tell us your personal perspectives on this programme which has carved out a significant place in our country's service community.

    • Teach for America? Wendy Kopp speaks at Penn

I know a lot of people are intruiged by the idea of Teach for America. It's a great way to give back, work on our resume, and avoid the reality of actually working in an office 5 days a week right after college.

I was lured by the idea of it too, but have recently come across a variety of media and personal stories that have proved a little less...well...attractive.

Today Wendy Kopp, founder of Teach for America, is coming to speak at Penn, for a lecture and Q&A session at 4:30 p.m. in Huntsman Hall Auditorium G06. I won't be able to make the series, but hopefully she'll address some of the more negative press about self-selecting to ivy leaguers and the like when she speaks.

I'll keep you posted, and if anyone else can post on her speech, i'd be really interested to hear about what she says.

    • Why Teach for America?

The NYT Magazine uses Houston's inner city and a promising TFA student as an example of what works about TFA... and the goes into the controversey about what makes a good teacher? I dont think it goes deep enough into whether or not the short training programme and the highly selective nature of its acceptance process actually produces a good situation. Further--I would like to have heard from some of the many situations I hear about in which the teachers are not the perfect models for this situation. Unscientifically of course, most of my friends who did TFA did not work out all that well and are no longer teaching. Its more complicated than that people--becuase the ones that DID work out are some of the most sucessful early teachers I know. That's how complicated this project is--there's no answer at the end of this CRITICAL mass--only the journalism and work from all to have an rich understanding from which to make their own judgements. The NYT Magazine uses Houston's inner city and a promising TFA student as an example of what works about TFA... and the goes into... more
