This may sound cliche' and preachy, but it's true: studies have linked these snacks (the very ones in the cafe drawers) to obesity, diabetes, violence. There's a GOOD reason that California has banned the sale junk food at all schools.
I tried to subvert the dominant paradigm last year and have our snacks switched to no avail, so I thought I'd make another attempt at a Snack Food Revolution. I mean, how can such a progressive company like Current support such nutritionally-harmful companies (Pepsico, Frito-Lay, Hershey's, etc) by purchasing loads of these unhealthy snacks?? We might as well put a bucket of sugar and a salt lick in the cafe' :) Do you like, or eat, the current snacks? Or do you want something healthier? ??! Speak up!

How about both?

Jamie Oliver: School Dinnersthe most famous chef in england started a revolution on this in english schools. as grown adults, we should probably follow suit...?

I couldn't agree more. I don't want to ban anything but I would certainly like healthier alternatives. Even our dried fruit is covered in sugar. What can I do to support the revolution?
-
Or at least those Natural Cheetos, organic red vines, and macrobiotic ramen.
-
Comrade. I agree. We should have disciplines in what we feed the people. We should guide our people to the better way. They will be happy for such guidance.
-
You mention salt licks as if they're a bad thing...
-
can we get a trough of oats to go with the sugar and salt lick?
-
i also requested healthier snacks, and was told that there is a food survey coming up soon where we can all speak up, and that if majority wants healthier food, we will get it. most people i talk to want healthier food (good numbers!), so express that when the survey comes out.
not only is healthier (and by this i don't mean diet food containing carcinogenic poision) food better for our bodies, brains, and productivity, but we are poised to set a good corporate example by supporting sustainable and eco-friendly commerce by buying local (like an organic fruit box from Farm Fresh to You or another local farm) and organic.
on a related note, i would love to raise support for (a) washable or biodegradable utensils and plates, and (b) composting at current. i would be willing to help with emptying compost, if it were a matter of labor, and i bet others would be willing to pitch in too. -
Seriously though...I agree and love the new pretzel snacks we have now. I do indulge my Cool Ranch Dorito craving once in a while, but I certainly wouldn't miss the junk. Well...I'd miss the little chocolates. Those are the perfect little post-lunch topper.
What are the options out there? Scot, are you going to do a little recon and let us know? I think it'd be easiest to give us a list of choices like they did almost two years ago--what fruit we like, kinds of nuts, sweets, drinks, etc. -
Rancid might have ripped off England, but the East Bay did the healthy school lunch revolution first -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_Waters
Also saw Channel 4 ranked Jamie Oliver as #28 on its 100 Worst Britons special. -
and what on earth has happened to the faux-healthy, "fruit-inspired" junk food snack industry over the past 15-20 years? The abomination known as "Fruity Snacks" is an insult to the cherished memory of the Fun Fruit trees

Alice Waters - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaChez Panise chef that started health school lunch revolution. Only in Berkeley.

Regina: we had one of those survey's last year, and I made a concerted campaign, but the majority didn't speak up, so nothing changed. I also am for biodegradable utelsils..in fact i've already sent memo's on this and have examples at my desk!!!
To marlys' point about having both...i thought about that...but then, why should we support companies that contribute so much to the rise in obesity and diabetes in children? -
Current TV // Currency // Two Dollars A DayYou guy have obviously never had snacks in other countries. Remember Current doesn't HAVE TO give you snacks.

wish list: plain unsweetened organic yogurt WITHOUT nutra sweet (a natural brand), more fruit of a higher quality (preferably organic), fresh veggies (like kale, chard or collards, which could be steamed in the microwave), soup that doesnt contain msg or massive amounts of salt. i know these options are more expensive, but i bet lots of people would be willing to sacrifice quantity for quality.
-
An organic, local fruit box would be awesome. But we have to keep the bananas too, even though they are heavy on the food miles.
-
Yeah, i was waiting for someone to mention that roberto....I don't eat the snacks at all bro. I bring my own.
-
also; if it was a choice between Current buying the current selection of snacks or not buy any snacks all, I'd vote for no snacks at all.
-
I think I'm in the minority but I can't live without my free Diet Coke.

We should ban smoking within 2,000 feet of Current too. That'd be so super and healthy for everyone.

I propose that the fruit budget instead be spent on a chocolate fountain.
Safeway and Costco aren't known for their health food, I wonder what is available?
A lot of our demographic is violent and obese with diabetes. I suggest that our snacks were picked on purpose so that we can get to know our audience better.-

Yes, these amoral corporations that have systematically bastardized food and nutrition in America (and around the globe). Problem is they've been doing it so long and so efficiently that any alternatives to these mega manufacturers are going to be more expensive. We Currentians will probably have to make some snack sacrifices to fit within the budget, but our bodies and earth will thank us. Im down if youre down!

Fruitguys - Fruit that WorksWe NEED fruit guys fruit. They offer fresh, local, seasonal fruits along with all the staples. I got a delivery from them every two weeks for about a year and it's safe to say that's was the most delicious and healthy year of my life.

Wait, what health food can you get from Costco and Safeway?-

LocavoresCurrent SF should join the Localvores September 2007 eat local challenge, at least in terms of our snacking options!

First off, isn't this clipping just a bit to company oriented to post on Current.com? Well the topic is great for Current.com but the discussion is more a noise thing since it is focused on the junk food at Current! Bring back Noise! Hahahaha.
As mentioned by Roberto, Current doesn't have to buy us any kind of snacks. In fact, since we run out of soooo many of them sooooo often it's hard to believe that people would rather be without any of it, if it isn't healthy. I agree healthy options are great but if you didn't like it you wouldn't be eating it all now would you. Ok maybe some of you don't as Scot said he brings his own.
I for one would like to see more folk take part in CLEANING UP AFTER THEMSELVES after they indulge in their coffee and unhealthy treats! That cafe is often so messy, it in itself is just gross! If we are so health oriented can we be cleaner more considerate individuals as well?
Ok Rant over :) -

the survey that went around last year, I remember didn't open up on a mac. Since most of us use mac computers here.... it's not REALLY surprising that the response was minimal, is it? (and using dead tree paper to ask for Vitamin Water wasn't too much fun).
I wouldn't mind better drinks (Vitamin Water, or stuff with mega amounts of caffeine to substitute for people who don't drink coffee/tea), but most of the snack stuff is fine by me. This whole "healthy" thing is a fad that'll blow over in a few years anyway. :P -

I wanna follow up on the "salt lick" mentions. We should have actual, working salt licks available to all employees who want them. Perhaps even musical salt licks, so whenever you are using them, a merry tune would played by your to tongue. Kind of like a therramin.

I thought I posted this, but here it goes again. If it shows up twice, it's twice as true. About the "salt lick" thing... I think there there should be real working salt licks available to all Current empoyees. Musical ones that play a merry tune caused by the movement of your tongue. Kind of like a theremin.

You are not the only one who has made this an issue over the past couple years. It sure would be nice to get a response from those responsible for ordering snacks.
Surely there must be alternatives with the ability to stay within budget. And i FIRMLY think that any snacks with partially hydrogenated oils or high fructose syrup should be banned, big corporation or not. voluntarily feeding this to employees works against good business practices in my opinion.-

Mmmm, yum! Is that a YAM tamale in my mouth right now?

We're going to scrap pagination for a bit while we work on how to handle it properly. Who knew we'd get 43 response conversations! (OK, we did!) ALL RIGHT, TAKE IT TO THE PAD! (just kidding) new pagination functionality coming soon...
and back to the topic at hand -- Jason, I'm on board with the bad-stuff-ban, even though i eat and love that stuff at the moment. Probably because I eat and love that stuff at the moment.
