The interesting thing about how many items used to made was not only that they lasted longer, but that they have a more natural life cycle i.e. a carbon-steel pan gets seasoned and improved with use. Now, new technology feels more disposable I'm on my third iPod, but having paid for only one of them. Nostalgia for this idea seems to also be part of the appeal of steampunk and is gaining critical mass in some circles.
