UK Banning Cars From School Zones?

The Institute for European Environmental Policy in the UK is looking into banning cars from school zones, not to protect students from being hit by a car, but instead to get kids to walk more. Like here in the US, British children are packing on the pounds, and a more sedentary lifestyle is a contributing factor.

  • This is a great idea, though I'm not sure I'd want to be seen walking to school with that troupe. Seriously though, I remember in high school people would drive three blocks to school. It's ridiculous. I love urban living for many of these reasons.

  • Hey, what's wrong with this?
You can't discount the online entertainment factor. Just something to consider.
  • What's the real problem here?
Isn't this a band-aid on the symptom, rather than going after the much larger issue of childhood obesity, which I would like to the industrial food complex?
  • You can't argue that it wouldn't help though. It's part of the problem of obesity. People don't use their bodies for anything at all.

  • In my day, we had to walk five miles to school, barefoot, in the snow, uphill, BOTH WAYS. Lazy kids today.
  • Don't see how this will work in the US where most schools (suburban) can only be accessed by driving to them. This is viable in urban cities but most are decreasing in the school-age population.
