How easy is it to use and abuse California's medical marijuana laws? Vanessa Wruble finds out.

It''s funny how the only hope there is of ever legalizing marijuana in the U.S. is by labeling it "medicinal". I agree that pot has medicinal properties, but in my opinion the "medical marijuana" term is merely a label that has somewhat effectively managed to soften the moral barrier with those that can not get past the facts.

My mother had brain surgery 2 years ago (just now ending the healing prosses) for ceizures. She uses medical marijuana. It truely helps her. She does still have ceizures every month, but after an episode, she will smoke and it will help relax the muscles. Her body will be one big charlie horse. So for one little plant to help fix the problem is great. I myslef suffer from P.T.S.D. and Depression. I refuse to take ANY anti-depressant that is a man made pill. I was 15 and i was put on meds. I had to try 6+ pills, which all made me sick and feel unlike myself. I had no drive, no imagination, very "Bla". At one point i had "ticks" from one medication. It scared that crap out of me, because i was told they might not go away. Luckily they did and i have need taken another pill. I now smoke Marijuana and it truely does help the p.t.s.d and depression. Medical Marijuana can really help people. we are not some stoney pot heads sitting around doing nothing. I live a very productive and important life. Medical Marijuana is a beautiful thing.
p.s the only reason Marijuana is not legalized, is because of big tabacco.-

Isn't it a little biased to call getting medicinal marijuana "scoring some weed"? If you had gotten a prescription for Vicodin or Percocet would you be just as apt to report your actions as "scoring some painkillers"? One of the fundamental problems we have in this country is the barriers we erect in rhetoric between illicit and licit substances. Yes, medicinal marijuana was harder to get than a beer. But when you look at the statistics, beer and alcohol in general kills a staggeringly higher amount of Americans annually than does marijuana, even when you consider incidence of use. So, ultimately we have to ask ourselves: Does such a policy make any sense?

Marijuana should just be legal or decriminalized
It is not a gateway drug
it is not a killer drug
ameth, coke, acid, ghb, prescription drug abuse are the real killer drugs -
note to self: move to california.

A well done pod, but very one-sided and told from a "users" perspective.
If you've got 90mins, this film offers a more balanced viewpoint, though still primarily in favor of "users" -
some singer once sang
and not to change the subject but
did you ever wonder why getting high was a crime...yeah... a crime
marijuana
a gift of god to my brothers and me
marijuana
the government wants to test me whe i pee
(phish?)-

Another nifty pod from the Vanguard Department!
I like this; it's got a very straightforward and investigative feel. I also like the use of the interviews with individuals on the street at the end to correlate to the question of what one goes through to get a medical pass, and why.
I also like how it the process of getting it created a subtle critique/discussion regarding the matter of people abusing it.
Nice work. -
Whether marijuana should be legalized altogether is one issue. But there is no way people should say people suffering from cancer and other diseases should not have access to medical marijuana. That is crazy...these people really do need it.
-
marijuana shouldnt be illegal period... how could so many people be hard headed towards this issue... thousands of people are thrown in JAIL for carrying, using, smoking and selling marijuana (good people are thrown in jail).
marijuana isnt illegal because the government is trying to protect its people... what is there to protect.
I was arrested for a gram of bud and when i asked the cop what was so bad about marijuana he responded with this after a 3 second pause.... "it makes you lazy, man." seriously? what about the t.v. and this here computer and the very cars we drive in... give me a break. -
The reason why there is a "War on Drugs" is because all the money that gets brought in from arrests, fines, court costs, etc. That money is used to fund police enforcement and other government functions. That is why it is so hard to make marijuana legal or at least decriminalized.
Think about it...-

while i agree that people who abuse this system should be prevented from obtaining a card and in the light of modern law, people should not obtain a card if not eligible but in my opinion, all marijuana should be legal. Its about freedom to do what you want with your body and to prevent someone from obtaining a drug or any substance is purely restricting your freedom. An age limit should be place just as with alcohol. Both substances should be place at the age level of 18. Make cigarettes illegal, they kill people, even the advertisements against marijuana can't make that statement, even thought that too would be restricting your freedom so therefore perhaps you shouldn't make any substance illegal.
-
wow, i know people that make tons of fake Medical cards in cali, i think too many abuse it but many do really need it.
-
All in the name of Vanguard Journalism right?
around 3:00 she gets the card... obviously very excited.
But i had no idea it was that easy, even legally. Let alone just getting a fake card made. -
The end of this little video is true.. to many ppl would abuse it.... prob why all the other states wont even touch the subject.
but i will say that pot is a great alternative to stupid pills..
because pills just lead to addictiveness and then you got more problems than you started with. -
the cov has no right to be pro choice
-
The fact that it's illegal is keeping sort of a "gloomy" cloud over marijuana. Once it's legal, it won't be one of those things that isn't discussed - but rather it'll be a social activity much like alcohol is now (however, much safer of course!)

the government has no right to stop sick people from getting better or being able to function. they need to GET OUT OF THE DOCTORS office with the few Americans who actually are able to receive healthcare. :)

Unfortunately, I don't see Marijuana, despite all its positives, ever becoming legalized on the levels of cigarettes or alcohol if only for the perceived notion that any politician or activist for it must be some sort of "hippy," thereby quickly cutting short his career and accountability.
Hopefully Medical Marijuana will break free of this bias and bring comfort to thousands of individuals nationwide who are tired of the debilitating and addictive affects of the paradoxically legal drugs. -
Much of the reason why the dispensaries are so sketchy is that they operate in the twilight of law. Anyplace you have a large volume of MJ stored publicly is prone to robbery from bandits who will take the weed and sell it for money to keep, or Federally sanctioned dispensary busts which burn the weed and fine the proprietor for money that they keep.
I think the only difference between the two may be wardrobe selection and firearm proficiency.
