Above is a link to another Current pod about HIV and AIDS.

I also read an interesting piece in the NY Review of Books of a book callled "Invisible Cure", by Helen Epstein. Sounds like an interesting critique of the AIDS relief "industry" that has evolved in response to the crisis. Here's a NY Times book review:

  • While HIV/AIDS is largely viewed as a disease of poverty in places such as Africa, in India and China, it has emerged as a disease of development. As Adam shows in this pod, India's growth and the development of its highway system is helping to fuel the spread of HIV. If not addressed properly, will the disease become a handicap for the country's progress?
  • Laura raises an excellent point -- HIV has emerged as a disease of development in India and China. Traditionally seen as a symptom of poverty in Africa, you could also look at it as an impediment to development. In Africa, in addition to the human toll, the economic toll and the lost opportunity is huge. If HIV were contained, could the poorest of the poor countries finally get on their feet?
  • It is at least exciting to see that the sex workers themselves are taking to the streets and education other sex workers, rather than outsiders coming into the country and trying to do the same. I believe that this provides a certain level of understanding and a connection, more or less, because it may give a feeling that "this person is like me."
