These cities of the dead are one example of Cairo's version of the sprawling slum ...an outgrowth of the city's huge population. People seem to occupy every inch of space in this megacity, and as the population continues to grow, you can see 'illegal' settlements popping up along the periphery.

A principal reason that Current was founded was to "democratize" television... This doesn't mean that we decide the direction of the network in public forums where all the employees vote like the free citizens of ancient Athens. Rather, as I understand it, our founders felt that one of the reasons that American TV, particularly American TV news and nonfiction, can be so crappy is that it's produced by a very exclusive circle--not exclusive in that the very best minds of America are working in it, but exclusive in that you have to be really really lucky, or really really connected to somebody important, to work in it. So they wanted to throw TV open to the contributions of any talented people, anywhere in the U.S. or the world, as an antidote to the medium being dominated by the likes of... me. I started in mainstream TV news and documentaries back in 1983, by virtue of falling into the really really lucky category... So, for a long time, I've been one of those guys about whom you'd think, how come he gets to make stuff and I don't? How could I do worse than him? In my defense, I'd first say that I've been in the alternative TV news and docs business since the early 1990s, helping Anderson Cooper, Lisa Ling, Serena Altschul and company to challenge the existing norms. But I'd also say that sometimes when you've been out in the field, your brain fills up, and you can't notice anything else.... Take the giant Cairo cemetery, the City of Dead, which is profiled in this piece. I drove past it several times with Anderson and Andy Merlis, while covering the Muslim Brotherhood in 1993, and I drove past it several times in 2002, with Vanguard's head, Laura Ling, and Gotham Chopra. It looked interesting, but we were tired. It wasn't until I was in Cairo with Adam and Tracey Chang, that Adam suggested we take some cameras in to have a look at the place. And it turned out to be pretty interesting... So, yeah, I should have been looking around more thoroughly earlier, but ideally, as Current continues to democratize and expand its network of contributors, there will be more and more talented people out there looking into places and situations that we've somehow missed, and interesting things won't get overlooked.
