In the last decade, methamphetamine swept out of California superlabs to become the most widely-abused hard drug in the U.S. The battle against meth production has been the fight to control the legal cold medicines from which it is made, ephedrine and pseudoephedrine. Pseudo -- and large scale meth production -- have now been chased across the border to Mexico. Adam Yamaguchi goes down to check it out.

As you'll see in this piece, pseudoephedrine is the Great White Whale of the War on Drugs, chased all over North America, and now on the run in Mexico--without any diminution, so far, in America's supply of methamphetamine, the drug that results when you reduce the oxygen atom off of the hydroxyl ring on the pseudo molecule... If this movement continues, some law enforcement officials expect the meth business to be forced so far south that it is taken over by the FARC, Colombia's notorious narco-guerrillas... There are very important geo-political lessons in this, but the problem is figuring out what they are... In terms of the access, which was very good, Laura Ling and I have worked several times previously on stories with the cooperation of the DEA, and never burned them, so they were willing to extend themselves to a great degree on this one... This story also has a culinary note: One evening in Guadalajara, Adam and I saw a sign for what claimed to be the world's fastest restaurant. It served only a soupy kind of beef stew, and your only choice was small, medium, or large. They got it to the table very quickly. I can't say if it was world record time, but it was tasty.

The Methamphetamine issue is definitely a serious one, however the current restrictions on over-the-counter purchase of pseudoephedrine is aggravating at times for those who need it. For instance I work 16 hour shifts at a hospital and the drug stores in my area are only open 8am to 11pm. The restrictions make it so I can't just run to Walmart to get my Advil Cold & Sinus but I have to get someone else to due to my having to work when the pharmacy is open and it not being a true OTC drug due to the pseudoephedrine it contains. I believe there are other ways to crack down on drug issues other than punishing those who legitimately are trying to purchase things which, in others hands, may be used to make the drugs.
