Cambodia has one amputee for every 290 people - one of the highest ratios in the world. Recently, Kaj Larsen went to Cambodia to meet with young landmine victims.

width="486" height="407">More about landmines in CambodiaCambodia is a really interesting place to travel, though obviously a country with some tragic history.I visited Angkor Wat in 1999 and won't likely forget it.

Cambodian Mine ActionThis is a link to the organization that took us into the mine field. They are responsible for clearing a tremendous amount of land from landmines. It is a very interesting process and the choosing of which areas to clear becomes a very politically charged process within Cambodia

CIA world factbookIll probably get killed by the bloggers for this next statement, but the CIA is a great source for reliable information about a country. Not before you get all crazy on me, Im talking about basics like population, GDP, stuff they can figure out (not WMD).

I allude to this in my story, but after being there you really get the idea you dont care what the politics are, this instrument of war should be completely banned. Or the only types of landmines that should be legal under International Law are self destructing ones. Check out this wiki article about the campaign, take note of what parties are signatories to the treaty and which are not. In fact you can see it in this little map to the right.

Wow, I just had no idea that this is what people in Cambodia are still going through. 2-3 people a day are still affected by these land mines. Those are scary statistics.

Thanks for taking this piece beyond the confined shelves of Phnom Penh museums. Those Siem Reap kids are incredibly brave, resilient souls.

i spend all my free time in Cambodia, i see victims of landmines everywhere, so so sad. the young are very positive about their injuries, the older generation , im afraid use their injuries to beg.
i saw a young bookseller who had all his stock on a handcart and he wheeled it through the streets. he had no hands and put a sign on his cart saying " i want to work, not beg" good guy-
