There is a subculture of professional guinea pigs who undergo medical testing to either make ends meet or use it for their main source of income.

    • I believe that "guinea pigging" is awesome and the exact moment i turn 18 i going to find a scientific center and sell some of my time and health to science!!! I wish i could do it now because the money would really come in handy for prom!!! = D

    • Crazy!! I loved this pod. It explained a world that not many people venture into, or know anything about. I was intrigued the entire time; even curious as to whether they offer anything like this in my area! I think it's really interesting that this has become a culture - "guinea pigging" - and people consider it their profession. Excellent work!

      Keep piggin'

    • ok im a college student who, like abut 89% of the whole stuent population, runs out of money and cant find a job, i need some cash. most of the guinea pig experiments on my campus are harmless (ie sleep studies, brain activity on music, etc) Ive gotten paid more than $1300 dollars for a weekend and i paid my stu. loan off. I agree with this video pod because there is a demand, and like the america we live in, people will supply it..even if it means getting paid. People will do anything for money. HOWEVER in this case, i would be cautious about the type of experiments he is participating in. yeah he is pushing his health, but you should not judge other people on how they make ends meet.

      Raven,
I am a producer with the show "Inside Edition" and we are working on a story about how individuals are turning toward guinea pigging more to make ends meet. We are looking for people who have done this to interview. Please call at: 212.817.5521 or email: jenoch at kingworld.com

    • Wow, I never realized people could make that kind of money doing medical studies! I really like how you presented your characters and their different situations for participating in the studies. Also, moving the story along around someone's first time to participate was a really great way to tell the story. great pod. great topic!

    • Great pod.

I can honestly say that I didn't know much about this subculture and profession; it was a unique topic to explore and hear about. What I'm curious about (as mentioned by Juliet) is what sort of consequences continual testing of various drugs can have on individuals.

I imagine it must be quite a scary profession to be participating in, to never know what sort of effects the drugs may have on you until during/after testing, whether mild or quite serious.

    • People are now turning their attention to the psychological side effects of some drugs. The FDA is now requiring drug makers to study closely whether patients become suicidal during clinical trials.
