Hazleton, Pennsylvania, a small city equidistant from New York and Philadelphia, has a rapidly growing Latino population, including many undocumented immigrants from Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Hazleton was the focus of international news for enacting an "illegal immigration relief act" ordinance that sought to force illegals out by fining businesses that hire them and landlords who rent to them. Because of this, Hazleton was under fire from Hispanic groups and the ACLU, while its mayor, Louis J. Barletta, has been heralded as a hero by CNN’s Lou Dobbs.

  • I'd bet that most latinos/hispanics there aren't illegal, but a lot are. As well as people of other nationalities. But it's not about "race" it's about illegal immigration.

    How can she say illegal immigration does not put a strain on their community? And how is it racist?

    There is a big difference between legal and illegal immigrants. We need to stop giving services to people who intentionally break the law and give it to those who have paid their dues to become citizens.

  • argue the fact that it is difficult to catch criminal illegal immigrants bc they are not registered so one cant know where to track them. argue that it is unacceptable for someone to come from another country and think to kill someone in their safe haven -which is their home or house. but to somehow insinuate that violent crime is synonymous w/hispanic pple is unfair and racist. so crime and gang activity has increased in Hazelton with the influx of illegal immigrants from mexico? really?! as opposed to what? can one really prove that crime wld have stayed the same or decreased had there been no illegal immigrants. so say the criminals who shot that man cited in this story had been legal immigrants. wld the story have been any less tragic. you pple in hazelton have never had any murders by pple of caucasian descent? suffice it to say that there are evil pple in every race. alfred dahmer anyone? i will quote sean bell's father "is this 1958 or 2008" the scapegoating. that every problem imaginable can be blamed on illegal immigrants. as if legal status automatically changes one into mother teresa. nobody ever complains about european illegal immigrants. no, they dont exist if you listen to lou dobbs. everyone is obssessed with these pple with darker skin and dark hair and eyes. oh please!!! what's worse is that pple dont think that there is anything wrong with this treatment or with lou dobbs' rhetoric. so hispanic illegal immigrants are responsible for the spread of diseases, increase in gang activity (as if there arent gangs or other ethnicities-including caucasian), increase in crime, loss of jobs(dont blame all those companies that have outsourced jobs or america's superdependence on foreign oil that led to job losses in detroit). someone, give these guys (hispanics) a medal

  • it's not hard to find illegal immigrants at all. just go to any welfare office, public school, or community college in that (or any) area and you will find illegal immigrants. illegal immigrants usually come to an area where they have relatives who also live there (legally and illegally). It is a domino effect and very easy. If authorities really wanted illegal immigrants out, they would be gone.

    no one said that the hispanic community was the cause of violent crimes in that area except you and the people defending illegal immigration. it has nothing to do with your country of origin, it has to do with breaking the law. also no one said in that entire video anything about illegals coming from mexico, only one person (who i'm assuming was legal) said he was from N.Y.

    it can be proven that without illegal immigrants crime rates are different if you just look at the crime rates of a city with a lot less illegal immigrants.

    legal status makes a difference. illegal immigrants tend to send the money back to their country of origin. they wouldn't care about investing in their community because it's not their community, just the one they are staying in until they have enough to go back and live comfortably. legal immigrants show that they have payed their dues and want to be legal citizens. in addition to the dues that they pay they will most likely invest in their community because it is their new home and not temporary.

    seriously, illegal immigrants (NO MATTER WHAT COUNTRY THEY COME FROM) hinder the community; mainly financially. they are willing to work for lower wages since they are probably higher than any wages they could get in their home country, that lowers the standard for jobs in the community.

    why is it that every time immigration is the topic, race is brought up? it plays absolutely no part in the conversation.

  • a lot of people dont realize that illegal immigration drives wages down and drains on our economy all because they dont pay taxes. and the construction industry in texas and some of louisiana is overun with illegal labor. these people are a major threat to our economy and society
