SANDRA - 30 min documentary.
Dir. Hazuan Hashim & Phil Maxwell, 30min, UK, 2007
The world premier of a new film celebrating the life of the iconic landlady of the Golden Heart pub, Sandra Esqulant will be screened as a special feature at the East End Film Festival on Sunday 20th April at 6pm at the Rich Mix Centre, Shoreditch.
Adored by everyone around her the film captures a slice of her life in and outside the pub she has run continuously for over 25 years in the east end of London.
Listed as one of the most influential figures in the art world, her wit, warmth and eccentricity leap out of the screen.
Sandra’s affectionate recollections of the old and new East End are realised through stunning archive photography, which captures the changes in and around Spitalfields over recent decades.
The closure of Spitalfields market, regeneration and it’s impact on the local community are the backdrop to this intimate portrait of a real East Ender determined to stay despite the encroachment of the City and developers.
Sandra’s tenure of one of the few remaining East End pubs adjacent to the City is an extraordinary story of survival, family kinship and enterprise.
Featuring local characters reflecting the rich tapestry of clientele from the pub, Sandra is also saluted by Gilbert and George, Tracey Emin and others who have lived in the East End all their lives.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with the directors. An exhibition of East End photographs by Phil Maxwell will be on display throughout the festival.
