Located in Copenhagen, Denmark, Christiania is one of the most unique neighborhoods in all of Europe. Artists, academics and vagabonds began squatting in the abandoned Danish military base in 1971. Recognized as a culturally alive and free-thinking oasis, the commune has also felt pressure from the Danish government, which seemingly would like to shut Christiania down.

That guy in the video is me. I have not seen this video yet but the description contains direct lies! Although Christiania has had a liberal policy towards marijuana this has never extended to other drugs. Most importantly Christiania has NEVER tolerated prostitution and it has never had problems with it! I do not know where those lies originate but I am furious that my good will to talk about my childhood home has been abused in this way. As far as I have been told by the director this is the responsibility of Current TV, who also changed the title to the sensationalist "Dope Denmark", and I urge you all not to work with them and express your disapproval of this kind of manipulation of the truth!

Thank you for pointing all this out William! I was surprised to see the change of title as well, and had not seen the description of the video until this morning. I am unclear as to where the reference to prostitution came from- but I spoke with a producer at Current who was also very concerned with getting the facts straight and changing the title to its original, ?Christiania.?
A new description is now posted, our title back, and you may now see the piece online. Besides a couple small word changes in my titles, the story structure is as I originally edited. As of now everything should be as I had intended when creating the piece, and I hope it matches up with your understanding of what would be my glimpse into beautiful Christiania.
For those viewers just tuning in?.I?d like to express a bit more of my experience with Christiania. It is true that the community has had an open market selling hash. However this area, known as pusher-street, takes up a small fraction of the land as well as a fraction of what Christiania stands for. For me, creating this pod was an opportunity to explore the gorgeous landscape of the greater commune, to see the innovative architecture and to hear stories from those who?s lives have been touched by Christiania.
The community has faced closure by the Danish government for over three decades and has seen a great deal of pressure over the last few years. A lot of work is being done by the citizens to negotiate a positive solution with the government?Nothing is finalized and therefore the politics of Christiania are not heavily discussed in this video.
My hope is that this pod gives a positive look at what is an extremely positive place. Of course a short television piece only scratches the surface- so my advice is to visit Christiania if you are ever in Copenhagen. There are guided tours, great food, and awesome people. You may also visit link
William- I want to apologize for the incorrect information posted earlier regarding the pod as well as the misleading title. I thank you again for opening your door for me- I had a really nice day hanging out and touring your childhood community, and I truly appreciate the open discussion you allowed me to film.-

Hi williameinar,
This is Ezra from the VC2 Team here at Current. Thank you so much for bringing your concerns to our attention. We respect your comments and have already taken steps to change the title and broadcast description of the pod. Current TV is all about an open dialogue. Part of this conversation we are hoping to facilitate is viewers like you responding when they disagree with something on Current.
We hope that the changes more accurately reflect the picture of Christiania, and you will continue to engage with us.
I hope that you enjoy the pod.
Very best,
Ezra-

hey, thanks for the extra links swiyyah!
I believe that the director of the film "Christiania, you have my heart" is actually the father of William, the subject in my pod...I met him briefly, but unfortunately did not know of his film. I would have had a lot more to ask him!-

A pretty succinct portrait of a complex place. I wanted the editing to calm down and the music to go away. Maybe that's just me...
Re: hashish, prostitution and absurd lies - clearly the interns at Current TV were thinking about Amsterdam - it's a common, though inexcusable, mistake - and maybe an indication that a subject as sensitive and complex as Christiania isn't quite suited for a venue such as this. -
Beginning January 2008 the basic rent in Christiania has been elevated to around 1800 Danish Kroner (= 350 US $) PER ADULT.
Besides people pay individually for electricity and water acording to installed meters and for heating (wood, butane, fuel oil, wood pills a.o.). Besides that each citizen is responsable keeping one's house or flat in a good condition. That means that an average family of father, mother and one child over 18 typically pays what is equal to around 1500 US $ per month. No one can own their house og flat.-
