Black Gold was made by the brilliant Nick and Marc Francis who are also running a campaign to make coffee fair trade - you'll be right behind them after watching their film. The Francis brothers gave us a special mini Black Gold for Current TV, and you can check out the feature documentary in cinemas all over the UK this summer. This is a really great pod. I''m inspired to see the full length film. Best part of this shortened version is the discussion on the price of coffee. For each kilo of coffee grown, the retailer will make $230 ($2.90 x 80 cups per kilo). The grower receives 23 cents ($0.23) for that kilo. Truly eye opening. Please bring this film to the US.

I worked on this pod and having no real prior knowledge of the coffee industry it really opened my eyes, I did indeed wake up and smell the coffee and it wasn't fair trade.
I understand that theres a lot more to it than just the purchasing and re-selling of coffee beans. Theres the transportation, storage, marketing, etc. However, I dont think that giving the Ethiopian coffee growers a few extra cents (they arent asking for a dollar, theyre asking for 57 cents per kilo) is going to cripple the coffee industry.
I'd love to hear what companies like Starbucks have to say in reply.

It is sad STARBUTTS charging us over 4 dollars for a cup of coffee while buying a 10 lb coffee for less than 3 dollars.
