On average, each American produces approximately 8 pounds of trash a day. What happens to this garbage? Where does it actually go? This pod follows the flow of refuse from curbside collection, to unloading at a transfer station, to final deposit at a landfill. Are landfills really a progressive way to deal with our waste, or are they akin to sweeping our garbage under the carpet for future generations to deal with?

I loved this! Current is my fave channel. I live in Panama City, Fl and have been trying to find ways to recycle in my area and have found that Bay County has no recycling program for our community. and they promote our beaches as "the world''s most beautiful", but we are doing nothing to try to preserve it.

Rock on! I''ll definitely post a link this video on everdaytrash.com.

The Truth About RecyclingAs the importance of recycling becomes more apparent, questions about it linger. Is it worth the effort? How does it work? Is recycling waste just going into a landfill in China? Here are some answers

In Naples, garbage collectors have stopped picking up trash since December 21st, and protests have erupted. We can't rely on our shrinking landfills to stow away our trash - we should look at our recycling habits and learn how to waste less.
-
If we got the kind of power out of trash that the guy in the pod said it had the potential for that would be so amazing.

Nice job Isaac on this pod! Aside from the importance of the material, the compositions, interviews and editing were all very impressive...now hopefully it will get the attention of voters and lawmakers because this seems to be such an easy way to create more cheap energy — something we need more of every day it seems.

Just watched this pod tonight, and I'm pretty stunned. Again, great job to Laura and team for the story and exposure. I do wonder what the equivalent of this social class is here in the U.S.? I.e., those who do jobs nobody wants to do, and get paid next to nothing for doing it.
I'm also a little torn. China is getting a lot of spotlighting right now for its human rights and environmental issues. I do think it needs a break; it's a developing nation that's recently opened up to globalization in the past decade. I think the international community needs to be a little more tolerant and give China more time to develop processes to deal with modern life. -
Why let it go to the curb? Why doesn't EVERY HOME have something like a trash compactor that converts trash to energy?
I bet they'd cut down on packaging....
Do it!-

With all the talk "green" talk from Al gore and the scientific community, you would think that renewable energy would be the next oil industry, why aren't people doing these things everywhere and getting paid. The public doesn't even really have to recycle if the guy hauling off the trash is turning it into the energy that powers your home.

SHAME on retailers and companies that dump perfectlly good, new items into our landfills. How DARE THEY? I think they should have to pay a huge tax for every 'new' item they throw into the garbage and use that money to do something positive for the earth. Maybe if they had to pay $10 per item that is 'new', they'd think twice about dumping it.

Absolutely Amazing! I'm going to show this to everyone I know.

Great POD:) Something to think about! I hope they're doing this in China, since there apparently having a coal shortage and massive amounts of garbage from what they create and what they take in from other countries. They're landfills could probably supply enough energy for all of Asia.
