The performance-driven Reverend Billy, of The Church of Stop Shopping, exorcises the demons of a Starbucks in NYC with his disciples in tow.

Frappacinos taste good, but at what cost? I don''t know much about how the beans are harvested or the treatment of those who do so, but all I know is there are few things tastier than a chilled coffee drink while I browse the shelves at barnes and noble. By all means, make this company behave so I can enjoy their caffeine without a guilty conscience.

I uploaded a video of these guys protesting Gore''s hearing March ''07. They were actually singing there. I did not get an interview because they probably got arrested there too. I am glad they made it to air. They are an interesting bunch. Seems odd that they protested Starbucks and Gore. Starbucks buys lots of fair trade coffee.

This reminds me of the faux protests of Star Wars through the "The Force is a tool of Satan" web site. It landed on the web sometime before the Prequels started and has been a rallying point and a laughing point since.
I know that the over-consumerism in reality is a noose around our necks (suffocating us from truly enjoying the season or any holiday - because some SALE has been inspired by it! Or some greeting card, etc)... but a protest like this with an animate pastor/reverend who seems like a caricature of TV Evangelicals everywhere? Laughing point, not rallying point.
That's just me though. -
im a christian, and this is the kind of things that make us seem like nuts. this dude was crazy.. and that kind of thing is not what christianity is all about

Starbucks isn't perfect. But neither am I.
Does that mean don't shop at Starbucks? Actually, I say enter the "demonic realm" that is Starbucks and grab a Comment Card, write down that you hope that Starbucks carries all Fair Trade Coffee AND Chocolate, in everything from their syrups to their pastries and counter candies. (Ironically, they carry Fair Trade Chocolate on their counters in the UK, so why can't we push for this here?)
May this be a revolt towards love. Not annoyance that turns Starbucks customers into demoniacs. If you get enough people simply sending in comment cards on the issue, I think Starbucks would listen.
Amen to that. -
Also being a christian, I have to say this was a little extreme. Although, I have to say, I'm not a big fan of Starbucks either, but that has more to do with their innability to brew a simple cup of coffee than anything else.

A real American!

THIS kind of thing makes Christians seem a little nuts?!? As if a virgin birth and human sacrifice to appease a grudge-bearing god isn't more nuts than a Billionaires for Bush-style protest of Starbucks. I'm assuming Rev. Billy is as genuine as Borat.
Personally, I'm guessing that Arthur will return before Jesus.-

These people are crazy, but I agree that consumerism is harming us. At least they're doing something about it, and I admire that!
-
I agree with their cause, however disagree with the way they decided to protest. Their actions seemed a bit extreme, blocking the doors and such. Made them come off as a little crazy, and I don't understand how getting arrested betters their efforts. I believe there is a right way to protest, and that there is a wrong way...

I think this guy was paid by Starbucks to make protesters look like extremists and crazies. The "free trade" coffee is actually an interesting issue because the free trade label actually doesn't so as much good as you might think.

I work for Starbucks and i am hear to say that they are most likely the best corporation i have come across. Giving third world nations people jobs their children health care and schooling. The kids even earn food while they are in school for the family. On top of that its a fact starbucks pays more for their coffee than anyone else. Also With howard schultz coming back in and running Starbucks it will only get better. These bible thumping morons only care about what they can claim in the name of jesus so please enjoy your frapuccinos and your lattes and take comfort you are helping children gain educations that would have never gotten it. If only more corporations took some time to care on the side of profit the religious would go after them for careing.
