I guess horse and buggy drivers once felt the same way - right?

Why would it feel the same way? Bicycles aren't becoming obsolete, more people are riding bikes nowadays especially due to new technology, and the cost of gas prices.
Driving a horse and buggy wasn't really a profession, and the ones that did have a related job, they got hooked up with something to make their job faster.
What you should have said is, this must be how the plant workers in Detroit felt in the 70s/80s.-
