After Don Imus was fired for using racially insensitive language, some critics argued that it was time for hip hop to re-examine its vulgar and misogynistic lyrics. Anthony Marshall hits the streets of New York where people weigh in on both sides of the controversy.

if imus got fired for saying nappy headed hos. then every other person, black or white, who used the same terms, should also be punished. this issue is one sided. it seems that if black people use it its ok and otherwise its not. thats called a double standard. and for the guy who said were getting paid now, my question is, is money all you care about. i would say thats why were in this to begin with. because the people who produce this music, and say these things, know it sales and dont care about the outcome. very irresponsible attitude.

another thing too, while were on the topic. all the hip hop artist ive heard say the same thing about the subject "its in our community, so we just talk about whats going on". that is the biggest cop-out ive ever heard. the truth is, if your in a bad situation, then why perpetuate the violence. you would think that people in this type of situation would want to make it better for the future generations by offering sollutions instead of just mirroring reality with lyrics. i think they just use that so they can continue to collect that check and not rock the hip hop boat so to speak, or they''re just ignorant about change.

I think the issue got turned on it''s head when the fire went from Imus, where it belonged, to hip hop artists, who are primarily black and represent a substantial part of the black community.

Hip hop artists self censoring themselves is not going to stop poverty, or racism or the fact that cops continue to kill unarmed black people with no repercussions.

But the fact that now people are talking about rap music exposes the deepness of racism in this country and how permeated it is within the media.

Im glad Current has a producer that chose to cover this topic . It''s one of the most important issues in the world-wide hip-hop community. There is a double standard around this word. im not going to pretend that i dont use this word, but i shiver everytime i say it and i grow closer and closer to regretting the impact the N word has had on my life and my speech. I just wish that this word wasnt the virus that it is now. This word is also a reminder that the civil rights movement is still continuing. This word still has power.

here is my deal. if you take away the word nigger then you have to take away all the other words that degrades a race. example: japs.

it takes a lot to take out one word.

Rap‘s critics have been complaining for years, only to watch the music become even more profane — and more popular. But now it seems as if Don Imus may be accomplishing what a generation of detractors could not.

Demonstrators marched in a mock funeral procession through downtown Detroit on Monday in a symbolic burial of the "N-word" and an effort to persuade black Americans to stop using a variant of the racial slur in hip-hop music, comedy and casual conversation.

Now I own the Slang dictionary, but this one looks like another must have.

I think nowadays the younger generations, take words into their own meaning, so a negitive word to a thirteen yr old native kid might mean something not so negitive, but they really don''t know much better. People say its mean this if said like this or by this person... And with Imus gettin fired for saying nappy headed hoes... I guess the media has to control our attention somehow

The truth of the matter is racial slurs are used by all races. I have Japanese friends that call other japanese people Japs, I have chinese friends that call there other chinese friends chink. I on the other hand hear them but would never say that. I''m 1/2 West- indian and 1/2 black, and yes I do use the N- word but not toward my asian friends but towards my friends of dark color. If this concept is so hard to understand your Stupid.
Yes there is a double standard and there will always be a double standard. People of other races can''t use racial slurs that don''t refer to them also. Period.
Imus broke that rule and he was fired. It''s very a very simple rule. I never said it was fair, I just said thats the rule.

Ok this is a tighrope issue becauseon one handI have heard it used often and still dont like it then on the other hand I listen to artist who use the word so its a slippery slope. When do we are a community (not black but human) start to say hey if those people wish to use a word that has negative meaning then let THEM DO THAT, but I will do what i am doing over here.
*I respect the freedom of speech and I understand that a story is being told on a nagative situation but just as much as ANY ARTIST be it movies music painting or literature is allowed a freedom of expression when you aim your expression at a person or group then it becomes a whole different issue.
Imus attacked a group of women with a derogatory statement and though he is allowed his freedom of expression and speech it was done to belitle others.

As said by Papa Roach on their first album INFEST
..My words are weapons.... In which I murder you with! Think on it
