Angel's Deportation

In Juarez one day I ran into this guy named Angel who'd just been deported, after having lived for over 5 years in the U.S., legally, basically because of a traffic violation. Even more amazing, he lived in Northern California, was from Tijuana, but was deported all the way to Juarez, south of West Texas. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency does this a lot, apparently, to make it harder for people to try to cross back again.

  • Nicely done. I greenlighted it, but I'd recommend cutting about a minute of the interview footage out and adding in some subtitles for the sectioins where there's no commentary text running on the screen (more because the background noise which fades in and out than because of Angel's accent). The added visuals and the text are really well done. It's a story that needs to be told.

  • you need some proof that his story is true. I looked around and from what i learned you cant lose your green card for Traffic Violations. You have ZERO supporting documentation or interviews. Thumbs Down.
  • the united states should be deporting criminals. not people who make an honest living and pay their taxes. sure he made a mistake, but it wasn't punishable for deportation.
  • I thank that Angel's story needs to be heard. I agree that the interview could be cut down but I really don't think the square motion crop stuff serves the piece at all.
  • well i did the cropping and changing coloration to make it more visually interesting, since i didn't have much b-roll to cut away to.
but keep in mind this piece was done real fast because it was supposed to be news, not a tour de force of cinema.

I think what's most interesting about the story is not why he was deported but the distance they transported him, that whole strategy of taking deportees really far from where they are or where they know anyone, to make it harder for them to try to come back. I've heard anecdotally of other cases of this happening too.

you're right, though, it probably could be cut down in length.

  • I thought the piece was nicely done, being a hispanic american, this case is not surprising to me. I've know many people who've been in similar situations and have been deported. Thanks for shedding some light on this issue and for the individual who wrote the comment about checking around and finding out that "supposidly" the federal government doesn't deport b/c of a traffic violation...GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE SAND BUDDY!!!! The FEDS can do whatever the hxxx they feel like doing. You're probably the same person who believes that everyone in prison is guilty and I'm sure you're a Bush fan!!
  • Apparently I'm not very cool. I see the illegal immigration from Mexico to be nothing less than an invasion. Angel may have had a traffic citation, then again maybe he had an actual criminal record. If he was legally in the United States, he would not have been deported. Frankly I'm tired of the blind eye policy from the United States Federal Government. Illegals should be deported and the bill should be sent to the Mexican governemt. If the Mexican people would like a better life, I suggest THEY reform their corrupt political system. I do not believe there is a lack of honorable Mexican Government officials. But apparently, they don't choose to do the right thing.

  • An INVASION? Why don't you try getting along for a few days WITHOUT any Mexicans and see how that works. And speaking of corrupt governents and invasions - what do you call Iraw? A "liberation"? This is a good little video and I wish there were more like it.
  • I feel sorry for this guy. Unfortunately the U.S. government has taken it upon itself to turn "undocumented workers" into the new Jews, to scapegoat and blame them for everything. To pass the blame on to them, to raise up racism and fascism. Ignorant people will just go along with it. They think they are in the right, since they are "just following the law." It is just another tragedy that we have to live through and fight against.

  • i love this idea... this would make a good idea for a feature narrative film. maybe the world would understand the validity of his words. it could do without the graphic gels. good work! how did you acquire him for an interview?

please, please, take a second to return your feedback on my buddy's <a href=" http://www.current.tv/watch/60193451">can-ceptu... video. it could use your critique and approval for tv.

  • Nice job! It could definitely lose the color gels, and varying aspect ratios, but the message is great and the interview is awesome. GL
