  • Father modern China? I thought that was Mao Tse Tong? My take from my public school education here in New York was that your great grand dad was a western puppet. He was another war lord who financed his war with opium at the expense of the chinese people? The communist methods may have been cruel but they seem to have put China into first world status. Maybe by just keeping out the western dope peddlers, and kicking the peasants into gear they are now on the verge of becoming a superpower. Actually the father of Modern China is Sam the megalomaniac Walton and the Wallmart machine :-) Your great grand pa should have killed Mao when he had the chance but Mao was tough and survived to make a comeback. as for being raised by the catholics in Hawaii. Didn't those missionaries end up owning everything in site. The Big Five were C. Brewer, Theo H. Davies, American Factors, Castle & Cooke, and Alexander & Baldwin. God and profits :-) The Chinese seem very cool about the whole opium pushing western imperialist period that Dr. Sun Yat-sen has come to represent in many minds. I don't think china could have survived another 200 years of western influence. Americans make a great democracy because our ancestors were a bunch of ass kicking, strong willed people. The Chinese ....eh you guy's are still doing the kow tow bow? China just didn't have the hoot-spa for democracy. It was the Greeks, the Romans and then the Americans.
The subject of Dr. Sun Yat-sen was been played out for political gain of the west in the last century. It would be interesting to see a modern balanced documentary about his life. He must have been a very interesting and courageous character.
  • Although I am no expert on the history of China, I must comment on briandonofrio comments. His only reference for attacking this min-doc, is based solely on "Public School Education" in New York...New York City....get a rope.
If anyone today doesn't know how one-sided and narrow, and incomplete the history books are then they are living in oblivion. I, as an American Indian can attest to this. Look at your history books and tell me about how much is missing, or incorrect about America's First Peoples.
I feel that we need to keep an open mind and take the time to absorb the information and think for one minute and ask yourself....is it possible that the american government interpretation in our history books could be wrong? Don't be so quick to judge your family, as Dr. Sun quoted "The Whole World is one Family"
  • Very polished and well done.
  • Dr. Sun was ahead of his time and even his colleagues in the Chinese revolution, were not willing to put his ideas into practice. He was not a warlord, and he laid the foundation for what became the Nationalist Party (KMT). The KMT under Sun's successor Chiang Kai-Shek unified China, and fought against Japan, but was too corrupt and inefficient. After fleeing to Taiwan, the KMT took many years to finally institute democracy, but passed the final test when it peacefully handed over power to the opposition DDP in a disputed election. The most important role Dr. Sun plays today is as a bridge between the Communist mainland and democratic Taiwan. One day Mao's picture will be taken down from Tiananmen Square and replaced with Dr. Sun's picture. On that day we will start to understand his true legacy.

  • Have you seen the new History channel declassified Mao? It backs up my assertions that the Dr. was a dope peddling western puppet. Hawaii was and still is western puppet production central. east west relations center:-) Ha. Dr. was peddling dope when Mao was fighting the Japanese (History Channel.) He is the father of Tawaiin but China. Thats a stretch. He was another friend of the west like all those South American friends and Arabic friends :-) I still say Sam Walton is the father of modern China. Mao a strong second because he ripped the place to shreds to rebuild it. Nothing more devoted than a 14 year with an AK and no education. Then again Mao had a bad case a VD eating away at his brain. Too bad The good doctor hadn't killed Mao when he had the chance, he would have saved China a lot of suffering. Maybe if he could get that dope peddling under control.
  • Excellent. Well-balanced and thoughtful. As a resident of Honolulu's Chinatown with an interest in history (and having read quite a bit about Dr. Sun), I cam away impressed. That Dr. Sun is respected and revered in both PRC and ROC is telling of his enduring legacy.
