- VC2 on TV (6166)
When the Vietnam War ended and U.S. troops pulled out of Southeast Asia 30 years ago, they left behind more than 100,000 mixed-race children fathered by GIs. Now this generation of Amerasians has reached adulthood, and many are seeking to reconcile with their American fathers before it's too late. In Thailand, Ancharee Nakket travels back into the shadows of her past to examine the boundaries of race, nationality, and love.

Compelling story, visually and narratively. An important glimpse at another consequence of war and globalization...family and identity. A great lesson from our past and very timely and appropriate for our world today. Greenlight.

I spent a week in Thailand after the tsunami in Dec. actually evacuted from my bungalow during the Sumatra Quake. I've been on the same canal taxi's and as a producer.....This was shot extremely well great audio, great video, a meaningful story as well. I definetly give this a greenlight. Just watching and hearing this puts me back to the night where I thought I'd never see my family in the US again due to Tsunami scare. Great job.

An important story, very well told and beautiful to watch. It would be interesting indeed to re-visit the young woman after she has lived a few years in New York.

This movie gives the viewer a very in-depth look at a difficult situation. The filmmakers sensitivity, and care for this subject is unmatched in anything i have seen. This piece needs to be shown on TV, so that a larger audience can benefit from its insight.

I was adopted, and while I had a more positive childhood experience, I very much identify with wanting to know more about your biological father. I have met my biological mother and I can say first hand - about 50% of who you are comes from environment/nurturing and 50% comes from genetics. My wish for this woman is that her biological father would watch this pod and recognize the beautiful woman he helped create!
Definite GREENLIGHT!-

This is a great piece...I like how the story is told and how it concludes!

This exploration of the issue of racism in Asia is laudable. I found it very interesting to hear the word "half-child" used by Thais. There is a similar word in Japanese for biracial children. I'd question how one human call another human a "half" when it is so clear that we are each part of the same whole.

Southeast Asia was, and still is a playground for GI's and working girls as they call them in that part of the world.
Much has been said about the problems of prostitution there, but Carrie covers a different and compelling side of the story, and does it well.

Sad, shocking and inspiring.

Great peice!! I'm half white half Korean myself and my parents met because my father was stationed in Korea when he was a US serviceman. We moved to America when I was 1 but things were never as hard for me as they were for her. It's sad to see that she has been so hurt by everything.
Congrats on getting this on the air!! -
As someone who covered the war in Southeast Asia; as the Dean of the Graduate School of Journalism at Berkeley from which Carrie Ching graduated, and as a Board Member at Current, I want to say that this piece impresses me as something of a model of good pod-casting.
As a former correspondent who actually spent a good deal of time in North Eastern Thailand, I find this a haunting echo of that almost forgotten time.
As Dean at Carrie's School, I feel immensely proud to see a former student finding a way to do meaningful work in a TV landscape that is increasingly resistant to good international reporting.
As a Board Member of Current, it's gratifying to see the concept of this inter-active/citizen journalism enterprise so beautifully incarnated in a single, elegant, heartfelt piece of work.
-
Watching pieces like this is what makes me so proud to work for Current. Well done Carrie! You've not only captured an incredible story, but your ability to open your subjects up it what makes this a dynomite piece . I hope we get more from you!
