Queensbridge Wind Power

The Queensbridge Wind Power Project presents a vision of a future when meeting energy production needs can actually enhance the beauty of a city. Queens generates half of New York City's energy, and The Queensbridge Wind Power Project investigates how clean, renewable wind power might be integrated into the landmark architecture of the Queensboro Bridge. This project is designed to engage the community in a dialogue about the potential of wind and other alternative energies in an urban setting.

A short (7 minute) video shows the origin of the project and includes interviews with Climate Scientist Dr. Cynthia Rosenzweig on the effects of global warming on the New York region and Technical Designer Markus Maurette on the creation of a computer model of the bridge fitted with various wind turbine designs.

    • This is a valid area for this application, it looks like we are going to fix the US from the bottom up. The gov is paralyzed and ignorant/out of touch whit its constituents.

    • Nicely produced and presented. I'm having issues with the content, though. The reality of designing, procuring, and installing structures on the Queensboro Bridge can be measured in huge costs. While a designer on the video can speak in general terms, no costs were presented.

While I can make no comment on the actual engineering of such a project, I can cite other projects that modified an existing suspension bridge. For instance, the city of San Francisco, the California Department of Transportation and the Golden Gate Bridge District spent nearly $2 million in just the feasibility study of a design measure that would prevent suicides from the bridge. Actual cost to complete such a modification would run millions of dollars more.

Add the complexity of actual moving parts to the Queensboro bridge highest structures will be priced in the tens of millions of dollars. Then consider the safety measures and other mitigating efforts required to protect the bridge and users from a failed turbine blade (which would weigh tons and can travel over a hundred miles an hour), you have a cost that makes the $75,000/yr cost of running the bridge lights seem like chump change.

Also, when you consider the maintenance cost of such turbines similar to those at California's Altamount and Palm Springs wind farms plus the limited electrical output, the project faces huge obstacles.

Don't want to be the one to pour cold water over this noble idea, however there are reasons not to get overly optimistic of windmills on the 59th Street Bridge.

I would love to see the idea moved to locations where wind turbines could be mounted more cheaply, safely, and at far, far lower costs.

    • I think there are two stories here. The story about the bridge is engaging and powerful. The interview segments with the expert on environmental issues are weakening the storyline. Selling global warming is important, but to a certain extent how it is being handled here is a little distracting.

I like the discussion of the role aesthetics play in development and design in relation to efficiency and productivity. The choices of looking at bridge blueprints in 3D were a great decision.

    • This was really neat, Great story. I loved how they made the turbines architecturally pleasing as well as functional. My city has built a wind farm a little outside the town, but it not pretty. Some people complained to a local newspaper about them saying very ignorant things about them. Such as, "I sure have noticed since they built that wind farm it has been a lot more windy around here." People need to be informed what these turbines do some of the elderly think we are trying to make wind with them. This is a great video. Well done.

    • I would love to see this project happen. This piece was really well done, but I agree with some of the other comments that it could be shortend down a little bit...not too much, since most of what is said is important, but there are a few moments where it seems to be repeating itself.

    • Very good! I love the video. Very informative and it needs to get out there more!

I used to live in Queens, and it is so true about Queens having so many towers that lets out carbon dioxide. It makes the city and Queens look ugly and unhealth. That is what we breathe everyday and that is bad.

Hopefully the Queenboro Bridge Wind project will happen because there definitely needs to be a cut down on the carbon dioxide in the city.

      Overall the video was great!

    • We're building an international bridge here in Buffalo and wish the planners had taken something like this into consideration. The problem isn't that it might not work due to engineering issues, but that forward thinking environmental ideas such as this aren't even a consideration for most projects.

Greenlit it for the subject matter.

    • Great thinking.
We are also involved with "Wind" Energy as well as Alternative fuels but finding it difficult to capture the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit of investors and people interested in helping to move it all forward; mostly because so much of our process is based on R&D; at least for our Wind projects which are Vertical Access systems.
If anyone has an interest and would like to know a little more IÂ’d be happy to share some of what we are doing and what our goals are.
We have ideas related to our large cities as well as ways to help the small rural communities across our Nation. It could be a lot of fun to be a part of it somehow if you have the desire.
We look forward to seeing more of your project going forward and would be happy to help in any way we can as well.
