Woman Over Beast

Let's Ro-de-o! Meet some of the hippest young cowgirls around -- they're fiery, tough, bright, and muddy -- plus, they're roping to win -- in tropical Hawaii.
Though few on the mainland have heard about Hawaiian Paniolos (cowboys), the lifestyle these native Hawaiians brazenly pursue echoes hundreds of years of Hawaiian tradition -- and American culture -- as they remain the historically first-ever cowboys (and cowgirls) to tame the wild west.

Best pod I've seen on Current. Funny, empowering, infomative, evocative. Sistah, aznuts, you got one greenlight!

Forget Brokeback Mountain! This is the most enduring cowboy -- or cowgirl as the case may be -- story around. Thank you for showing us these young woman in their strength, beauty and determination. Music and footage captures the Hawaii we know, and didn't know until now. Love the glorious rainbow at the end. Aloha!

You go girls! But I'm a sucker for anything rodeo... This is a fabulous story, with great characters, and gorgeous video. How'd you order up that rainbow in one of the last shots?
Honestly tho, I'd rather hear more from the cowgirls and less from the tourists on the beach...
Get these roughnecks on the air soon! -
Outstanding job!! Very powerful! Excellent use of perspective. I love the "mythic" narrative at the end. Everything was pieced together perfectly.

I am struck again by Ms. Cuneo. This is the exact sort of polished yet wonderfully rough and honest product we have come to expect from the terrifically insightful mind that brought us Tuna Just Works. You are the rare filmmaker that succeeds in sharing, in a unique and meticulous way, some of the things that kindle your obvious and vigorous passion for the world. What can I say specifically except that it made me want to rope me a goat AND a fine Hawaiian cowgirl at the same time, and even though I'm a "masculine" guy I really was burnin to put on some of those sweet outfits! I agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Hamer, the best pod on Current. When are you going to get your own regular show?!!!

I feel like there is so little out there about Hawaii besides the idyllic tourist perspective. I really appreciate what this piece brings to the table. A great cultural journey...I want to see more!
-
Yee Ha! This piece made me smile. Great little insight into the "real" Hawaii. More please!
-
Cool to see a different kind of Hawaiian girl!
-
Outstanding glimpse into a little known part of Hawaiian culture. I loved the contrast of these tough cowgirls with the tanning tourists. Great job; can't wait to see more from Ms. Cuneo!
-
This was one of the best short films I have ever seen!!! I loved the way the artist brought the rodeo to life, showing the passion of the women in this sport. It really portayed people's misunderstanding of the importance of this cultural event in Hawaii.
Thank you! It is ready for tv!

Another incredible short film by Ms. Cuneo, and probably the best one yet. I loved the comparison between the rodeo and the beach throughout the video. Definitely ready for TV! I can't wait until you next project.

nicely crafted. well edited.

Love the style of this video. Good intro bringing us into the typical Hawaiian culture then hitting us with "45 min away..." and showing us a completely diferent culture. Nice work!

yes, wow. great everything. and of course, i love to see women expanding into all the last frontiers. thanks.

I didn't want to watch at first because I hate watching the cattle getting roped. But piece was really fluid and the women are fierce. Loved it!

I grew up in Pueblo Colorado, and I've seen many a rodeo. Besides the Rodeo Queen roping a calf, or women barrell riding, I've never seen a woman compete in a rodeo either bull riding or attempting to stay on a bucking bronco (forgive me if my rodeo lingo is off).
All that said. Really good piece, it reveals a part of Hawaii almost never seen by the rest of us (I allways thought that is was strictly a midwest thing).
Keep up the good work. Greenlight!-

I think that this is awesome, I thought the editing style rocked and the music was fantastic. What a unique story, I would like to see this air! Go Girls!
-
so great to see girls so determined and never knew hawaiian cowgirls even existed! this is one of the best stories i've seen here so far because you really feel like you went into another world. as a female audience member, i think this kind of story needs to be told. greenlight, girls!

When I saw: 5:24 I thought: "Oh, it is probably too long".
Then I realized it is NOT!
I dont like the rodeo idea. Looks like the animals are not having fun.
If I was ok with it I would give you GREENLIGHT! -
But you know what: Green Light!
-
ya know, this is a damn good video!

Interesting video, never knew they did the cowboy thing out there, definitly greenlite!

Love it! I have a rodeo POD I'm making, too. I'm kind of scared to upload it thanks to all of the preconcieved notions about rodeo and the misinformation surrounding the sport. Even though I don't participate in rodeo, I'm pretty informed about it and hate being judged if I defend it.

Wonderful work on your video... I love the breaking of stereotypes...
My students would love to get your feedback on their video Urban Navajo
