Up to 120 000 students on March 16 and about 200 000 students and strikers on the 28th hit the streets to protest against the CPE (contrat premiere embauche). They both began in calm fashion, but things got a bit out of control once the everyone reached Sevres-Babylone, where they were greeted by riot police.

I read about these demonstrations in the paper... From what I understand, the gov't is trying to change the rules for firing young workers. This great footage is an opportunity to explain what's going on. Instead of the same old ultraviolence...
Who's that guy in the mask supposed to be -- Villepin or Chirac? What does the CPE mean exactly? And why are students and union members rioting in the streets to defend it? How would the proposed changes affect young people trying to get ahead in the world? Why should I, as an American (non-union) worker, care? How do these students look back on the May 1968 protests?
Sadly, American news consumers (myself included) need a lot of basic background info to understand what's going on across the pond. -
Excellent footage....

to respond to rmd22...why should you be concerned as an American who already lives under a sytem that is far more competitive than France's and who has no job security whatsoever? well, one thing i've always like about the French, being an American in France, is that when something pisses them off, they do something about it and they make sure they know exactly what the government is doing at all times. Ok, so don't go around burning stuff if you don't have to, but atleast they have a means of showing what they think. and it pays off. last year thousands of high school students protested against reforms made to the baccalaureat by Francois Fillon. that did not go over too well. he was even removed by Chirac.
so i think, as an american, it is interesting to see how the french deal with their problems. sometimes strikes are a bit exaggerated but many times they are justified.
the uprisings in the suburbs was far overdue. and the protests going on right now are because unemployement is a big problem for young people. also , their secondary education does not respond to the market. people get out of college and are not fit for the working world. it is a combination of problems that have led to these protests.
the US could take example on some of this. why werent there enourmous demonstrations at the White House when the wiretapping scandal was exaposed? why no action? is it the media? who's fault is it that no one is held accountable for the Bush admin's mistakes?-

Exactly! *Tell* me -- and all the lazy, apolitical Americans -- why we should care *in the video*... 'Cuz worries about job security are universal.
Btw, I'd *love* to see riots in DC about Social Security reform -- 'cuz that's my paycheck you're talking about!
Viewers will respect your interpretation and opinion because you're right there, getting the great shots and talking to the people...
I'm sending this video to my French cousin, see what she thinks...
Thx! -
It is a pity that 80% of this report shows the stuff made by 100 angry people and that the demonstration, to me attacks against the police is not to be considered part of it, gathered more than 100 000 people and that should be the main info and not that stupid actions. I am really disapointed about the way this too easy images... I do not think this is relevant regarding the title of this report. Anti CPE good report should have been composed of interviews and explanations and not that bad movie stuff.
