When compassionate buying is practiced by tourists who visit places where many poor and jobless people live, they are helping the local economy. But how do they know when what they are buying is actually made in another country altogether? In Cape Town, SA women's empowerment groups not only employ women in arts and crafts, but they often teach them additional skills in business, language and creativity.

A brilliant film about how a community with challenges has adapted the materials that are available to them, while benefitting the earth enviroment at the same time and are improving their economic outlook.

Well done. Good music

Great subject, good shooting, well edited. Very, very good use of music. Well done. Some the most professional work I've seen submitted to Current.
My one beef is that it's a little too long. I'd love to see it tightened up and made leaner. I'd especially like to the see the nat sound/music breaks between soundbites shorter.
Now, I'll qualify the above criticism by saying that I'm steeped in morning broadcast TV (I'm an professional editor) so I could be over conditioned to conciseness.
I also have a side qualm with the Current Website. It's frustrating to have to watch the pods on a small 320x240 screen. I'd like to be able to make the video full screen. Even if it's a little compressed and blocky, that's fine.-

This was fantastic. Very inspirational and hopeful. Especially the work of KEAG. They turn a negative situation into a positive. That is truly the soul of humanity. Thanks for this video!

Thanks to current.tv, one museum gift shop is reviewing the items it sells as "handmade" and has placed orders with the workshops in this film. I appreciate your comments too. I know the video is a bit long for current, but I know some of the women would have been heartbroken if they were not in the film.
I did not expect so much good footage actually. I was supposed to shoot another film and when that fell through my partner Rosie and I met the buyer from moyo and had only one day to shoot the film. When we transcribed the interviews we ended up with 7.5 minutes that we felt were essential. Allowing the singing to flow and some personality to shine through added more. Even if the piece does not air, I know the women are very excited that they are being seen on the internet worldwide. It means a lot to them to know that they are not invisible to the world. It feeds their hope for a better future and the possibility that people care about their well being. -
a bit long but great work! "GL"

Nice piece. I just got back from Cape Town and your piece conveys its mood very well. Where did you get the drum loop? I'd like to use similar background music for a pod about surfing (and apartheid) in SA. Thanks, DeanHamer@aol.com

I had never travelled to the Caribbean before this last year. I was stunned to realize that in Jamaica, most of the things I saw for purchase were from India or the Pacific Asian Rim...
It was difficult to find things that were locally made & fairly traded. I found myself loathe to barter for items, because I felt so awful asking people to live on less because I was a cheap tourist.
