  • As always, Joe creates documentary footage with a message of enlightenment in mind. This clip inspired me to realize that other cultures share in some facets of my beliefs and experiences while others in that segment of society do not - much like here in the United States.

I am a fan of the work Joe does as it brings issues to the surface that need addressed and he faithfully welcomes views in line with his own as well as those who dissent.

Great work! I hope to see some of your work on the big screen!

  • That's beautiful pod. I want to see it on Current. So: GreenLight!

  • This is an amazing demonstration of how people are the same all over the world - both the good and the bad. I liked the way you slowly reveal the topic instead of hitting us over the head with it. .
  • Interesting. Unexpected.

  • As humans we are all beautiful, though our opinions and beliefs may be ugly. These sensitively evoked perspectives demonstrate the human tendency to create our own realities and justifications in a complex world. Thoughtful and beautifully done.

  • Very professional production values that add to the interviews and what the people have to say about gay love. Sometimes just letting people speak on gays in video documentaries, without quick edits and flashy camera movements, does much to educate about tolerance and love. Joe's video, and the cross section of people giving their views, is one of those videos.

And just the right does of low-key music. Bravo, Joe.

  • I wish you would make a video like this about China some day.

  • Beautiful work. Maybe I could do something like this when I'm in China.

  • Great pacing, beautifully shot, and an overall moving and emotional piece. Congrats!

  • I thought this piece was excellent and issue driven. We do not often hear what people think of homosexuality in Mexico... I'm just not sure why it is a Travel Pod. Should homosexuals travel to Mexico? Shouldn't they? Where should they go? What does this have to do with a destination? What does this have to do with travel? It seems more like an Issue Pod.
  • This is a good piece about homosexuality in Oaxaca, but I agree with Joshua it is not a Travel Pod, we never saw Oaxaca itself neither how the place is, where to go, or other aspects of this mexican state. It fits better into Culture or Issue

  • I happen to think this is a travel pod. If I am gay and I go to Oaxaca, this piece certainly has meaning to me as a traveller. Additionally, travelling can be about other people as much as about landscape. It's a new experience.

As always, I support the few LGBT pods on this site. There should be more. Oaxaca has been on the radar recently for its drag culture, which is accepted, if you believe what is written about it. I'm also told that the emmigration of men from the area have created a new independent culture of women. So the one thing I missed from this piece perhaps are lesbians? Good job, and congrats.

  • If I made a Pod, M83, about peoples' opinions of homosexuals in Brooklyn, would you think it was a travel piece on Brooklyn? If I am a traveler and I watch a doc about artists in Canada, certainly I can make use of it on my vacation in Canada if I want to see art or meet artists, but that does not make it a travel documentary. This piece is not a travel POD simply for the reason that it is not about the act of traveling to or through Oaxaca. Whether or not you can use this Pod as a tool in your travels to Oaxaca, M83, this Pod is not about a destination. It is about a few individuals opinions of homosexuality in Oaxaca. It does not tell you where to go, what to do, how to get there, or advice on hotspots. If this were a travel pod for gay people who are considering Oaxaca, certainly they want to know more about the city than a few peoples opinions of homosexuals. I want to know what to do while I'm there, and on the contrary, if it a hostile place for gays, why we should avoid it.

However, I still think it is a really good Pod. It is shot well, the music is great, and the people are intereting. The audio and the compositions were executed very professionally and artfully. The subjects' feelings on homosexuality are simialr to peoples' opinions in many western countries.

I still think it is an Issue Pod (which would place it in a category that is not under consideration for the HD Camera prize...makes me wonder...)
  • This pod gave me a FEEL for Oaxaca that I probably wouldn't get from watching the Travel Channel or reading Lonely Planet. Maybe that's why it was picked as the winner of the Videomaker contest: It's original.

  • Hi Joshua-

If you only had five minutes to read about Brooklyn, or Oaxaca and you picked up a travel guide in the bookstore, opened it up to the gay and lesbian section and started reading, at the end of your five minutes would you have gotten to all the other stuff?

What I like about the piece is that it does not squeeze 30 minutes of material into 5 minutes. I can't really watch something for five minutes and expect to know the whole story, but if the selected material is focused tightly then I appreciate knowing a little more about some small topic, rather than next to nothing about a big broad topic.

I'm replying here because pod length and pod content are important issues for me. Maybe we can move this to another thread and continue to discuss this with others in the current community.

  • this is a very compeling piece, I was somewhat offended by the inacurate translations. The information was dramaticaly reduced for a english audience. Stay true to what the people are saying.
Over all a great effort and a real eye opener for many. I hope that many of a younger generation could get exposed to this and hence create their opinions.

  • I agree the translations need work.
But It's very interesting. I like how wide the opinions are and the different points of veiw very well produced.

  • Great Pod, I'm glad you got selected for air. Congrats. I didn’t think the translation was that bad, what were you referring to specifically, Dannii?

  • Hi Joshua:

I think the translations work out fine. You can always polish a little more, but the essence of what's being said is there. I loved the pod. It's compelling and very human.
