Body & SOUL The famous NYC party made a rare appearance this summer. Footage from the 2006 event and interviews show why even after the club that held the party shut it's doors, Body & SOUL has continued on, being the place for people to come together, dance away their pain and let their souls be free.

Interviews with Body & SOUL family members "Loose", Ricoh Scott & John Davis

  • Interesting bit of culture, I especially liked the intro, nice work, GL!
  • If you could, maybe add a little bit more about how body and soul started.

  • Thanks jason, great to see this interview
  • Wow, thanks everyone for watching and commenting. I'm happy people are in to the piece, the kind of club life you can find at the Body&Soul parties can be so warm and embracing, it just takes you away. I hope that comes across. Speaking of which if anyone has any suggestions for the piece, please dont hesitate, lemme have it! thanks again, J.

  • I am not sure that 5 minutes is a good idea. If you cut it shorter you will keep my interest non stop. And then you got GL. Let me know when you upload shorter version (you dont loose your GL - so why not?). And get some dancers in front of the cam. Let them say something. This "promoter" story is kind of ... too long and boring sometimes. Cut it down.
Keep the club footage and get some energetic people in front of the camera. You know what I mean. Right now there is too much talking. It kills the enegry of the piece. Dont let it happen. Reedit. Upload. Go on Air.

  • First thanks Voytek for the view, gl and suggestions! You've hit on exactly what I want for the piece more/diverse relevant personal accounts, and even now I am doing my best to track down dancers who lived the party and have stories to tell.

On the 2nd of july I shot an entire outdoor edition of the party, and made contact with many dancers for the piece. since then I've been trying encourage folks to contribute. However considering people tend to need to see where you're going before they are comfortable committing to giving their story, I figured it was better to get this edit of the video out and build from there.

In the meantime I was hoping (so far thrilled) that I would get feedback from people here in the community, so thanks again.

I definitely will let you know when the next edit is up!

  • I am a huge fan of dancing as you can see in many of my pods, so I was naturally attracted to this pod. Especially since I use to hear about it from other people on a regular basis. It is a good story, and had some really good shots. The photos were a good touch. I wish that there was footage of interviews at an actuall Body & Soul event. I assume that its tough to get old footage. I do think that interviews even today of dancers who attended would add more dimensions to this pod. What about an interview with one of the Deejays? I just think another element or two is needed. I just feel like it was too distant. I want to hear more people, more soundbytes, more locations, less of the founder.

Other than that, green light, but let me know when you re-edit, interested in seeing the next edit.

  • Very cool- as someone who spent a lot of time in the late 90s and early 00s dancing my azz off, I really enjoyed hearing the stories and seeing the footage from this scene. ::greenlight:: from me!
  • I think the shooting for this piece is excellent! Really great audio-visual experience. I do echo the comment about shortening it, particularly the part about underage drinking and possible shut-down. It seems a bit long...I love the description of the experience as "religious" because it's true that dancing and feeling music can feel that way. I defnitely wanted to hear club-goers say that rather than the promoter.

Anyway, those are my impressions...but all in all you shot and edited this quite well and I'm definitely giving you a green light. Please let me know if you upload another version.

  • Holla!!! NICE EDITING JOB! The footages and the interveiw flowed together as one. I would love to see more
    Great POD! Great Work.

  • Thank you everyone for the recent comments, they are really helping and appreciated!

I'm planning a few more interviews and in the process of connecting with some of the dancers from that scene including a few who traveled with the party overseas, and hopefully they will speak more to the "religious" or spiritual energy of the party mentioned by Boo3gie and a lot of people.

If there is anyone else out there in the community who wants to take a look and give an opinion, feel free.

Again thanks for all the comments so far!

  • Dancing is great for a lot of things, exercise, self expression, etc. but the drugs however...
  • "But the drugs..." are not the exclusive province of dance clubs.
Drugs are obviously often damaging, and obviously everywhere. That's why I chose in this pod to include the part where John talks about the effects of underage drinking on parties and clubs. John says (in regards to night clubs/parties) "It's an easy target..." which in my opinion has to do with the ideas people bring to clubs & parties more so than the events themselves. Thank you gwj for commenting!

  • I just uploaded the latest edit, it's shorter (under 4min) with an interview of one of the party's dancers and recent party footage
hopefully video egg will hatch soon and you all can see it. Its in progress and I think better. Community, lemme know what you think! Thanks

  • Hey Jscott, the newest upload is much much better. The B-roll especially the stuff from PS1 adds so much, and the interrview with "Loose" also adds so much.

Also coincidently my latest pod "Melting Pot" also has an interview with "Loose". Have a look.

    link

I just met him while shooting this pod, and he was introduced to me as an icon and legend in the dance scene, the fact that you also interviewed him I guess is a testament to this.

Good luck, wish I could give another GL.

  • I just "gave" you my second greenlight :)
Good job. Do you know where I can find party like that in NYC? I mean just a place where people come to experience trance. Not looking for a mate, show off etc...
I miss this kind of stuff and cant find anythinig in NYC....
    Voytek
  • I remember this party!! Loved it and got me over my yen for Ibiza...those were the days.
    suzarube
  • Thanks Votek, Suzarube, Mepop, yeah I shot most of the PS1 event,... it was beautiful...glad you likes.
Btw I saw "Loose" in your piece mepop, he really is a legend in the scene, we didnt realize but we met for over ten years ago!
As for places with good music, Voytek- François K. (all three Body&Soul DJs actually) have their own parties in NYC- (I didnt put that in because of pod length and not wanting to make a commercial) I think François' taste runs from classic house to a more trance sound, his party is at Cielo in the meatpacking district. I think sundays or mondays.

Thank you for all the suggestions and keep them coming. I will be making some tweaks to the pod (for example the camera used to shoot alot of the pod "died" while I was in japan and distorted the video, so that's why the glitches pop up..thats one thing I am fixing among other stuff...) and I have a few more interviews to add.

Of course If you think my pod should air, please spread the word! (i need the GLs!) and thanks!

  • I love the new version...especially the new voice you added. Nice work Jscott...I was a total house head in Atlanta (and LA while in college). This makes me wonder if I should don my big pants and head back out to dance somewhere :) And I'm really sorry I missed this Body and Soul event at PS1...! Anyway, back to the pod. I agree with previous comments: the PS1 footage adds to this immensely. It's very well shot and I like that it happened during the day. The cool thing about the club event is this whole idea that it's happening on Sunday afternoons, so to have the daytime footage --e ven though it's not at the club itself -- is a nice juxtaposition. Anyway, already gave you a GL, but hope you get some more momentum on this and get to #1.

  • Wow, nice work! Your footages and the interviews made me wish I was there. I could feel the excitement. GL Baby! Everyone should see this.

  • Dancing never killed anyone! Great piece.
  • Interesting. Smart piece. Got an insightful, inside understanding of dance club culture. If I may say so, the dialogue editing was a bit too hard-edged. If the individual dialogue cuts were dissolved ever-so-slightly they wouldn't be quite as noticeable. Otherwise, visually varied, with a nice ear for human reasons why people go to dance clubs.

  • Great Job
  • I've been a fan of Jason's work for years. Each one gets better and better.
  • Nice work JScott! This is a great piece that should air for sure. Great interviews, editing, and camera work.
    MissyG
  • Hey Thanks Missy and everyone! I'm really glad people enjoy the pod! I still have another edit of this to make, one that will be polished and smoothed out plus I've finally gotten a few more interview that I think reinforce the theme of it all. Thanks everyone your comments are helping keep me motivated. -J.

  • GREAT POD. I would love to see more work from this director. My wife and I run a Independent Black Film Festival in Harlem (visit www.imagenation.us). This is a film that we would screen. I know seveal people who attended Body and Soul. I can't wait to tell them about this pod. I never went, but the pod makes me wish I had. Current TV should STOP PLAYIN and put this pod on TV and in heavy rotation.
    Peace and visit www.imagenation.us

  • J, I like how your picture stands out among others in the list of top 10.
Only yours is PINK! Great pod. very nice music.
all the best to you always
  • I used a sony mic, an it picked up a hum, sounded flat... I boosted the track and added some filters but I have a limit to my audio sweetening knowledge.... so i am open to all suggestions... as for the rule of 1/3rds, yep I know it, and there are a few moments in the piece now that will be covered with b-roll in the final, but some of the jerky edits actually appeal to me... so i might keep'em thanks for the feedback
