Gay In Utah

In the ultra conservative state of Utah, where the Mormon Church has a heavy hand in the local politics, there is a surprisingly large gay community. This short film explores legislation in Utah that directly affects the civil rights of gay and lesbians who call themselves Utahns.

The subject is not specific to Utah, though. This look at the civil rights of gays in Utah is a piece of the larger picture of civil rights and religion in the United States and the need for separation of church and state to preserve our civil liberties.

Despite the official position and the actions of the Mormon Church to enact laws prohibiting gay rights, there are many church members, especially those with gay friends or family members, who are uncomfortable with the Church’s stance and are starting to stand up and speak out on the issue. It is with these small actions that hope springs forth that the future may bring tolerance to gay civil rights in Utah and across the United States.

  • Great short film. It just scratches the surface of an iceberg's worth of issues in this community. Hopefully you can develop it into a full length? Thank you, Missy, for doing this work.

  • Very moving and interesting piece. I never have understood why some churches feel that loving someone is "wrong". Good luck on the competition!

  • I have never understood how our goverment had the right to say who we can or cannot marry. Their is absolutely no harm in gay marriage or adoption. I am a true believer that you are born gay, your parents sexual orientaion have nothing to do with it. Furthermore, healthy children are raised in loving, caring homes. I know of numerous abusive, volatile, heterosexual families. Who gives anybody the right to say a man and a woman is what defines a family!! I am a agnostic, heterosexual, "DIVORCED" mother of 2 who feels it is a personal right to marry whomever one chooses. It is not the right of my goverment that I pay my taxes to, to say that gays are not entitled to the same rights as myself!!!!
  • Really well done. And, it's great to see a specific study about a broad issue in the context of a specific state and religion. I hope you submit this to Outfest as well.

  • GL Surprising that in this day and age this is an issue. But it is.

Straight couples can raise up bigots, gays and reasonable children to adulthood. Gay couples should have the same right. Most gays don't choose the life they are born that way. It is natural in the vast array of human sexuality.

Check out Sister Beatrice Explores. No gender issues here.

  • What suprises me most is how immature people are who have issues with the gay community. How is it that in 2007, we are still children in the playground, encouraging other children not to play with the kid who is different? Americans need to grow up. When you think about it, the homophobes are actually the ones with the perversion. I do not entertain the thought of what is going on in my straight neighbors bedroom, why should I concern myself with what goes on in a gay couple's bedroom? Why are they wasting so much time, energy, money, and resources on their perversion of thought? They ought to be ashamed.

  • Why be the victim all of the time? I think that says it all. On another note, how many active Mormons do you see being publically offended by the non-Mormons who go to this stage play that makes fun of Mormons? Don't hear any complaints about that. Interesting. Try putting on a stage play about making fun of the Muslims. Don't think that will work? Hmmmm.

  • Very informative. Excellent for expansively showing that there is no one "type" of being gay, even in Mormon-dominant Utah.
