Venice Beach happens to be my backyard, and I share it with a significant homeless population. Unlike most neighbors, we dont have BBQs together or stop for leisurely chats on a Sunday afternoons. Its quite the opposite, we (home dwellers) avoid eye contact, complain when someone has the nerve to set up camp next to our favorite café and all but cheer for the police when they do their routine clean ups. I consider myself a friendly and open minded person, but until recently, I too subscribed to this senseless form of intolerance.
One morning on my routine jog down the boardwalk, a weathered man resembling my father said hows it going? Normally, I would act as if I didnt hear him and go on my way; however, I saw something familiar in this guy, and I decided to respond. Lucky for me, Dan did not share the same prejudice about me as I did for him. We started with a neighborly hello that day, and now we meet up for a coffee or breakfast every couple of weeks.
URBAN CAMPERS is day in the life of my neighbors Dan and my new friend Matt. The film reveals our stories are not so different. Each morning we brush our teeth, and from there we do our best to deal with life.
