SPOKEN WORD ARTISTS SPEAK OUT ABOUT RACE AND TOLERANCE

Washington DC is one of the most diverse cities in the country, yet often people are kept apart by the divides of race, class and income. Two activities that bring people together are slamming poetry and shooting hoops. Thus it was a natural to film three DC spoken word artists at my neighborhood basketball court for this Seeds of Tolerance video pod.

Poetry ? whether it is spoken or sung, classical or hip hop, written down or improvised ? has tremendous influence on social norms. When popular culture extols the virtues of money, alcohol, misogyny and homophobia, it?s no wonder that?s what is popular. When popular culture starts to treat diversity as an asset and tolerance as a strength, it will help create a more humane society.

Socially conscious poets have already had a positive influence on society, and there are many organizations that are beginning to realize the power of this medium - but their audience is still small. My hope is that video and other forms of mass media will allow their message to be spread and popularized. The world could always use more tolerance.

  • This is a great piece! This needs to be shown on TV over and over again. I would give it a GL if I could...I am new to this site and do not know what "Competition entry" is. Hope it does well!

If you get a chance, please let me know what you think of my piece, "Talon the Warlord: IT Specialist" (an IDC film contest entry) Thanx!
  • Extremely important subject...executed extremely well. Hope it wins!
  • Very nice job of mixing all of the elements together and making the piece really flow. I love the reveal of "Humanity". This is one of my favorite SOTs so far.
  • I love this! Love the poetry of this important matter. love to hear your thoughts on my piece.
  • Ey Dean, today I saw you on a documentary about genetics in the Science Channel. Good to know you are working in that. Congratulations

  • I love the way that you cut between the performers to help build a new rhythm from the combination of the pieces. The body language of the guys walking while rhyming is fantastic. The impact builds and builds between the two stories toward the simple denouement that we're all a part of this giant thing called humanity. Beautiful! If you have a moment, please check out my latest pod, GLAMAZONIA. I'd love to know what you think of my pod.
  • Hi Dean I would have bet actual money I gave this a GL awhile ago, this is great, good work as always, come support my latest pod if you get a chance, Shadow Boxer link Getreel

  • Thank you very much for visiting and supporting my pod. That means a lot to me! Unfortunately, even though you intended to give me a GL - according to your comments - it appears not to have registered, as I cannot see your name on that list. Whenever you have a moment, please check it out.
Regardless, I am very grateful that you were able to appreciate the work I am trying to do. Thank you!
  • This is a REALLY well done piece. The best I've seen for the Seeds of Tolerence catagory. The jucstaposition of the color salturation and then the B&W is effective as well as the two poetry pieces being spoken are fantastic. Thank you for sharing this & getting it's message heard. ~MBS~

  • Hello. I wanted to comment on your piece. I thought that it was incredible. The mixed details between photographs, video of black and white, and the amazing reality that tolerance needs to be spoken about. Please help me as I am trying to speak for those who cannot in Peru, South America. I've done two pieces, Journey of Hope and The Voice of the Murmurs. I appreciate your input, suggestions, and support. If you could have a look at my videos, I'd be quite grateful. Cheers. Keep speaking up~ Danielmklopp~
  • Hello Dean:
I could really use your input, suggestions, and insights on a piece that I've got going. It's named the Voice of the Murmurs. It's currently at # 1. Could you please view, and give your input, and thoughts. I appreciate your support and advice. I admire your work. Thank you for your time. Peace. Keep sharing. Danielmklopp~
  • well executed! good job!! GL!!

  • Nicely shot, chopd and scored. I like that you kept the guys moving and how you found ways to connect the two performances. I like the ending with the guys in front of the grafitti and think its a stronger statement to end on with your quote, but overall its a winner. GL!
  • Yes, yes, yes. GL! I love this pod. The racial slurs really grab your attention. I kept watching, just to see what else they would say. Amazing. I put together a Sony ad (it's not at all serious, nor does it make a sociopolitical statement). But I'd be interested in hearing what you have to say about it. Again, Great piece.
  • Good job...

  • I appreciate your use of poetry to tell the story. The switching between B&W and color illustrates your point about perspective and color blindness. Great work.

  • Hi, you know Adam Schreck right? He's told me about some of the work you're doing in DC... Anyways, I wanted to share with you my latest pod Give Em Belle!. It's about a young politician struggling in a local election in Florida. You saw my last pod and had good comments for me, so I thought you'd be interested. Thanks a bunch... looking forward to any comments you've got...

  • Hi Dean! I wish I could GL this pod once again. In my opinion, this is as good of a production as all the others you have made and taken to TV. I really like the fact that you are very consistent with your use of the production values on all your pods. I also enjoy your subject matters.

Based on your experience, I could definitely use your feedback on my latest production. You were very supportive on my previous one, so maybe I can learn something from you on this one as well.

When you have a moment, please take a look at my pod , and let me know what you think about this reversed perspective on the world. Thanks for your time!
  • Stumbled across this. Don’t know why this didn’t get to TV.

    Great work. Really enjoyed it.

Please take a moment to check out my latest POD, BIG MEDIA fails again and feel free to give it a GL if you like it.

    Thanks.

  • Really powerful. I hope this is seen by more people. I liked the way you shot it. I'm curious as to what you would think of my VCAM for the Toyota Prius. Its not thought provoking like your piece but its different than your average advertisement.

  • This is great stuff. Tolerance starts in the home and the upbringing. Prejudice is nothing I have ever known and
I have to say I hate prejudice people :)

Our lifetimes are but fleeting moments in the annals of time. One day all people will be the same ...hopefully not just white dust left over from a nuclear explosion.

This belongs in the schools not just Current TV.

Dean, give up that day job and move to Hollywood :)

  • great choices on the spoken word artists and the images do well to compliment the poems. Only suggestion is a little touch up on the merging of sound bites.
