While walking along the East River at dusk on a summer evening, I happened upon this magical moment. I ran home to get my camera and captured this rehearsal over a 10 minute period, just as the sun set. As the joggers passed by and the lights came on under the drive, it was beyond beautiful. When I spoke to these lovely dancers from the MorganScott Ballet I learned they not only perform on the world stage, but they volunteer in the community teaching inner city kids ballet.

  • Know what? Instead of the titles in the beginning and the scroll at the end, start this piece off with essentially what you put into the description above. What gives the piece impact is understanding the spontanaity with which it was created, and that you captured it (and quite beautifully) in one take. Once I understood that, it was no trouble for me to give it a GL.
  • This is stunning getreel. I love the description and the fact that you captured this spontaneous moment. Now that I know a bit about the ballet company and what they do in the inner city, I wonder if you have plans to get sound from them to run at intervals under the really gorgeous video you captured...? I'm giving you a GL just on the strength of the visuals and the music. It's quite beautiful.

  • Thanks boo3gie for the kind words. I reedited, not one take anymore, think it works better. Were you at the IFP? our films were screened at the Angelika together, how cool was that as a New Yorker?

  • stunning, yeah, especially the play of the light and shadow against the grace of the dance.

  • thank you so much. I shot this in one 5 minute take but I think it works better with cuts. It truly was a New York City Magic Moment. Panasonic DVX100A @ 24P getreel

  • elegant, tasteful, and rather poignant...also interesting juxtaposition of something that usually belongs in a packed ornat theatre outside in an urban setting. Bravo and a GL.

  • There is something very fresh and inspiring about true form, taken from a seemingly prim and proper staged environment, and given the open air to breath. Beautiful people engaged in beautiful art... Everything seems to flow effortlessly inside of their space. My compliments to the dancers, and the person who captured them... Cheers!

  • This is the New York we love.

Screw the garishness of brightly lit financial centers, lifestyle condos, precious boutiques next to Section 8 housing, animated-digitized-illuminated-epileptic-seizure inducing advertising 20 stories high. You captured what people will want to watch and remember over and over again about New York.

It's hard to shoot and edit dance--you did a spectacular job. Hope we meet you soon! (BTW, not sure what you meant about embedding a link--seems like you have done it.)
  • Hmm, only thing 3 gals from Brooklyn seem to be missing is ta redhead! See my pic you rock and you made my Christmas with your killer comments. We must meet next time you're under the FDR Drive. I love that location because it's already lit, shot Seamus there too for Shadow Boxer. Everything I shoot is real time and one take. Thanks for getting how hard it is to shoot, edit and dance all at once, throw in being 62! Thanks to you and CTV for the opportunity. Getreel
