A Region of Survivors is an up close and personal look into the lives of three people affected by hurricane Katrina. Shot and produced from the perspective of a Houston volunteer, Tara L. Conley (film-maker) witnesses and experiences Katrina’s impact over a year’s time. Tara interviews two survivors displaced to Houston last year and learns through their riveting tales that it’s “people, not politics that influence change.” Through this illuminating video American’s will learn that people are still fighting to survive even a year after the storm. This short, but informative video captures the raw emotions of those directly and indirectly affected by hurricane Katrina. Also included in the video is never before seen footage from New Orleans after the devastating storm. A Region of Survivors should remind us—United States citizens, the media, and the government—that the so called “victims” or “refugees” of Katrina are more than just that; in fact those impacted by the storm are survivors—and nothing less.

    • Hello Friday025,
I have been involed in Hurricane Recovery work since Oct, 05. You did a great job in portraying these images, I am trying to help my people out but it is difficult when you can only do so much. I work for the State of Louisiana in Baton Rouge,LA. Yesterday(Aug 29) makes it two years since Hurricane Katrina destroyed much of the Gulf Coast, and the media wants to know what progress has been made if any? I am blessed to work with a staff that truly cares about what is going on, and we are trying to make a difference one person, one family at a time. Thank you for your courage and unselfishness. Keep on doing what you are doing. May GOD bless you and all of you future endeavors.

    • Really strong commenatry on the path to compassion....about the way that one begins to feel connected to others in a real way that calls one to transform their grief and anger into action. Thank you for this piece. I wish I could green light this more than once.

Please check out my work as well. I think we have something we can share with each other. My email is csessoms@verizon.net ...be well

    • Some people talk about a revolution. Others get angry and cry "What about me?" Some people sit idly by and wait for someone to tell them -what to do or what to think. Others carry the torch that sheds light on the human experience. In this case, you went to the root "the people" and came back as a radical. That's genuine social activism! Start a revolution Tara and carry the torch for the survivors and those silenced voices of Katrina. The water may have receded but the revolutionaries still hear the beat of the drum in the belly of the beast!

    • This is really good. But you have some serious audio issues with the first survivor interview. I'd try running that audio segment through a compressor or noise gate, maybe even a tri-band filter or EQ to get rid of the tinny echo present in that clip. The second interviewee video is very dark, I'd run a brightness/contrast filter on the video (audio is good). I'd throw lower 3rds on-screen when you ask your questions to interviewee #2, since we can't really hear your audio. Your fade outs on some of the clips (interviewee #1) come down too soon, so you are clipping the audio before it fades to black. The on location wreckage scenes are POWERFUL. If you need help with these technical issues drop me an email (zenbeer29 (at) verizon net). Despite the technical issues this is really powerful, your confessional at the start only adds your own human touch to the emotion of the piece. Well done!!! GREENLIGHTED! Good Luck in the Seeds of Tolerance contest. -zen
