Unlearning intolerance is a deeply personal choice. When one chooses to celebrate diversity and pursue tolerance, nobody can make those changes but the individual who made that decision. However, it is important to expose yourself to new perspectives and challenge your assumptions no matter what your experience level. We made this the subtle theme of our video.
When making videos that promote diversity, its incredibly important to keep your audience in mind. Since the subject is such a personal activity, we decided to personalize the message with our stories. However, our stories encompass a less-direct message of diversity: diversity is strength and its important to constantly question our assumptions. We do this without losing the impact that individual stories have on an audience.
The video also addresses the fact that everybody deals with issues of racism, sexism, and gender expression. Even within a group of gay and bisexual men, we encounter an astounding variety of difference. It was our goal to challenge people to think about the diversity even within their current network of friends and relatives. This allows an easy step into challenging ourselves with even more perspectives.
Its also important to show the difficulties any group faces without sending an indirect negative message about that group. For instance, LGBT teens account for one third of suicide in America, largely because of the portrayal of hardship that gays undergo. While we cannot ignore this hardship, its time to start sending a positive message to these people and our allies.
