I sat down with Gabriel Range, the director & co-writer of "Death Of A President." to discuss this controversial retrodocumentary first aired on Channel 4 in the UK, about the fictional assassination of President Bush in October of 2007.

  • looks like a great movie, I cant wait to see it! I am not American so i am not so sure about this but isnt your next election coming up on november of 2006? and the movie although bases on fiction Bush is assasinated in october 2007. He is in his last offical term because a president is only allowed three terms as president or something?

  • Good background piece, very nice interplay between interview and footage. GL!

Shameless Plug: Please check out my latest pod, LLOYD KAUFMAN crosses that line. Thanks!
  • DMJC, The election coming up on November 7, 2006 is the mid-term election for the U.S. Congress (the Senate and House of Representatives), not the presidential election which happens in 2008. The President is only allowed two 4-year terms consecutively from the term-limit made into law by the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1951. Glad you enjoyed the pod. -zen

  • Intriguing film. I want to see it. And that's what a good interview should do. I love the way Scott intercuts the interview with the film clips, and how he shows Grange and the film side by side. The transitions are smooth, but I'd rather that he did the film clips in chronological order and built to the peak action of the assasination with shorter and shorter clips, instead of them being indiscriminately short and long. I'll greenlight it because Scott did his job well in making me want to see the film. Now Grange should do a sequel: A Year With Cheney."
  • Timely news is implied in Current's very name! This is another incredibly relevant piece about a film and a film maker. Wonderful! GL!

  • I think you're really on to something here zen. This is a really brilliant pod format you've been following because you can use a lot of their released clips to add production value and you seem to have a knack for finding these people to do the interviews.

    Feedback:

I missed one of the interviewers questions but when I heard the answer it made me realize that it stood up well on it's own. Are you leaving those in as a stylistic choice or were you worried that the answers wouldn't make sense without a question? I know at least that last one seems OK without.

    Good work. GL

  • Nice! I just read about this film in a magazine; something about Regal Cinemas refusing to show it in the US. I am glad I could at least get some snippets of it. My only tweak would be to cover some of the latter part of the interview with more footage rather than the white flashes. I think the footage you excerpted from the movie is chaotic and strong, and would be a nice way to end, rather than on the director. Minor, minor, minor. Nice interview. Any idea from your conversation if this will, in fact, be shown in the US?

  • Boogie, the film opens in NYC today, Friday 10/27. We were really happy to have gotten access to Gabriel Range a full week before the film opened in the states. -zen

  • Plisko, I added in my 2nd VO question afterwards (V2) mostly because I was not sure if it flowed with the other 2 SOTs of Gabriel, I also wanted to balance the piece out with my voicing of at least 2 questions off camera to make it flow more like a "back and forth", to emphasize the dialogue Gabriel and I were having, but I suppose they can always go.

A lot of time my own questions and voice winds up on the cutting room floor (or in this case, the NLE trash bin), I decided to give myself 2 small regions where I could be heard as an interviewer.

And I hear you loud and clear, I stumbled into something really new and unique for Current. They already do those "pop-secret" movie reviews with clips, so I think showcasing interesting, controversial, and relatively unknown low-budget and/or independent films, and giving them a voice at Current is something I really hope will happen soon. Who'd have thought it... The Prisoner pod led to Jesus Camp pod led to DOAP pod, strange where we wind up from where we start. And I have 2 travel pods I'm working on while I'm in Prague the next two weeks starting Halloween night. ;) -zen

  • Hey zen. Grats on number 5 with a bullet!

Your back and forth works for me. I just wanted to know if you were worried that the answers needed them. Have fun in Prague.

. . and check out my new one :) It's a little different this time.

  • It's so strange and invigorating that the closer and more heated our political climate gets, the more relevant this pod becomes!
  • I'm curious to see that movie...

  • Haven't seen the film; but I bet such a horrid scenario would be just about the only thing that could result in the advancement of the Cheney/Rove agenda beyond Bush's term. Hell, it would play right into their hands.

Far better to elect a Democratic majority to House and Senate on November 7th, have REAL investigations, allow the people of the USA to see all the evidence so that a political will/demand for Impeachment and removal manifest...have a real fair and complete trial in the Senate and sayonara Bush/Cheney in 2007! Let Nancy Pelosi serve as the first Woman President for a year!

Then the criminal indictments come down, and Bush/Cheney are convicted and sentenced to life in prison in binary confinement (i.e. just the two of them together...forever)

    LOL.....Now THAT'S a movie! ;-)

  • It seems strange that this is a Brittish film. Did you ask the filmmaker about the political implications or motivations within his own country for such a film. Is this a sign of a degrading of the anglo american friendship or in its own way a sign of its strength Perhaps this is just emblymatic of the dominating political curent against the Bush administration?

  • Gabriel Range has done 2 other retrodocumentaries inside of the UK prior to this one, the first was a fictional account of the UK train system coming to a halt from overuse (The Day Britain Stopped - 2003) and the implications it would have on ordinary Brits (as you can imagine, the results are not good). The second was about a devastating terrorist strike wipes out much of Saudi Arabia's oil production (The Man Who Broke Britain - 2004). Both were made for TV in the UK. His latest film was (I suppose) originally only supposed to be in the UK, since it was shown on Channel 4 television, it got some exposure because of it's controversy and was picked up for cinema release in the U.S. I do not know if it represents a strain on Anglo/American relationships, but rather serves an account of a concerned British citizen who has strong family ties with people in the U.S. (he has family in fighting in Iraq) and lived here for a number of years. So it's less of an outsider perspective than you think. The film is not what you think, it's not so much about the death of Bush as it is about the fear that rules American society today in politics and government. -zen

  • I find this very fascinating
  • Thank you Zen. I shouldn't even have had to ask this question. Brittain is in Iraq! But you gave a great deal of addition insight to the piece and I appreciate that. I knew nothing of Gabriel Range before this film. I am absolutely going to see this film!

  • I think it’s pretty obvious that the man wanted to make a “leftists wet dream” movie. “It describes the consequences of the climate of fear.” “It sorts to link the invasion of Iraq with 9-11.” What are these consequences? Has the president caused this on himself with his questionable policies? Gabriel Range is projecting this vibe from his interview. He is insinuating that the president of the United States paid the penalty of warmongering with his death. Typical Anti-Bush hate. I didn’t really come to this conclusion until I heard his last comment: “The jury at Toronto said that they thought the film distorted reality to reveal a greater truth and which I thought was a very kind thing to say…” This man does not hide who he is; another conspiracy theorist. In addition, for a foreigner to make a film about the assassination of a president who is still in office, I think it shows very bad taste.

  • Zen,

To late for a Greenlight, but I love the idea of a fictional dystopia as a way to investigate the full range of differing emotions that we feel about our world. I'm glad this is being aired on current. I also really valued the feedback you left on my last Network Promo. I've just uploaded a new one, and I'd love to hear your advice...
Thanks a million, and congrats on this greenlight!
  • Hey I wanted to thank the UK Current TV fans for voting so heavily for this. It's great to be partnering up with our friends from across the pond on BSky. Thanks for your support and please watch my newer videos coming out soon. Thanks! -zen

  • I saw that show on c4 and i found it really boring.

  • Sad that films like this are top rated - it is just an expansion of C4 and other big media brands. This space should be for new stuff not ads for C4!!!!

    Dull, Dull, Dull

  • I'm sorry but i just don't see why this pod has been picked as it is just plugging channel 4 basically making it dull and unoriginal.

  • DOAP was shown in theaters as a film in the states, after it was shown on C4 in the UK, and was met with extremely harsh criticism in the U.S. media. While the UK may have enjoyed it on TV, the very topic of discussing a fictional assassination attempt on a sitting U.S. president was met with such controversy in the United States that a story on the filmmaker seemed to be in order - in essence, the story was squelched by our "free press". Not a single U.S. media outlet would touch this story, hence, why it was filed and picked for TV under "Current Controversy", thanks for watching! -zen
