It's refreshing and encouraging to see the issues of Native Americans raised. If Americans take a true look at history they will find that our European ancestors who "settled" the wild west took what was not theirs and destroyed entire cultures through war, genocide and spreading of desease. We took their land, their resources, and physically relocated what few Natives were left afterwards to some of the most desolate and inhospitable areas of the US.

We "preach" democracy to the rest of the world but fail to look in the mirror at our most undemocratic acts as a nation. To make matters worse, many Americans and most government officials still fail to acknowledge the losses encountered by Native Americans and even fewer will ever consider reparations for what was taken from them.

We have a huge debt to repay to the original Americans. The very least we can do is show them respect and acknowledge there imense loss. Only through compassion and understanding can we begin to heal the deep wounds that we made in the proud tribes of the Native American people.

May Wankan Tanka help us all find a way to heal tragic events of the past and make a better America for us ALL.
