  • This has a great message-- could have an intro at the beginning saying what the farm is and does and what has happened to it. GL

  • I've been very excited about my own garden.
I know the healing powers that contributing time to nature can bring.
If you have time check out my peices!
  • Im surprized that more people havent run across this Pod. It was so tragic to see the bulldozers demolish such a beautiful thing. I hope that you are able to spread your message to enough people who can help. I wish you the best is your fight.

  • Kudos for staying with this story and for this summation. I think it can be tightened up a bit -- instead of repeatedly cutting away to talking heads, which becomes a little boring after a while, take the audio track and lay it over video of the protests and other actions. Also, some titles here and there to give a sense of the chronology would help. But you've been on this story from the start, and this is a worthy addition, so GL from me.
  • It is scary how easily money can minipulate local government and force their corporate agenda. d2thaj2177@hotmail.com. Organic Food is the only way to go, and to lose a community farm is a tragedy. What is up next for you? Do you work on collaborations at all?

  • Excellent content. It's sad when the powers that be come in to violate a community and destroy something that was meaningful--something built and nurtured by the people. It's also increasingly sad to see how the authorities, especially the local police, only seem to serve themselves protecting their own necks...Instead of serving the people and promoting peace, the police in this video promote coercion and violence. I wonder how they can sleep at night.

  • WOW! "Here we are and we‘re not leaving!" My wife translates the song for me. The 1st time I discovered Urban gardens was in Havana Cuba and they thrived, producing organic produce with community involvement!! Keep up the great work supporting the small farmers and urban gardens! GL!
  • im a gardener, and am allways planting, a great garden became a small garden when i got hurt, and then sick, even when i cant walk far, i lay or crawl, people say im crazy. I just watched in amazement, people who are as passionate, about the enviroment and urban gardens Keep the fight going!!!!
  • I had to laugh when the male interviewee at the very beginning was talking about how the garden was a "natural environment" only to have his VO overshadowed by a train whistle....

    Nice pod.

@ Allen: they sleep at night because they're devoid of souls. I say this as a someone from a law-enforcement family.

It saddens me to see state authority (read: police) put to this use, but the problem really lies in the law. Unfortunately, police do what they're told, and if they're told to kick a bunch of protesters off of 4 city blocks, they're gonna do it.....violently if they so choose, as authority is the only currency they understand.

    Sad, sad, sad.
  • I agree, it could be tightened up a bit, and ditto on the audio comments. Nice story! GL
  • Beautifully edited, nice pace and feel. Always great to know how communities are organizing. It's not over! Fight on! I encourage you to post this to as many activist blogs, tribenet/myspace activist sites as you can. GL to keep the momentum going.

On a different side of empowerment please check out our piece: Crazed: The Belly Dance and let us know what you think!
  • Great footage. And a great feel for this remarkable community. There is something to be said for the idea that given a chance, people will come together and create something useful and uplifting.

May I make a few technical comments?

Great opening shot. You've established the scale of the South Central Farm. What may also convey the beauty of the enterprise would be shots of the hard-working, satisfied participants, visually conveying what the farm was about, without the difficult to avoid density of the on-camera comments. I'd also suggest you watch your chronology. There are particular critical events that ought to be acknowledged with an on-screen subtitle. And, if that wasn't enough, there's the political question. Why was this done? You may have deliberately dropped this weighty topic deliberately, but from a journalistic perspective, there could be a short synopsis.

Great dramatic footage, though. Perhaps too many "knock-out" shots, though. Let the quiet beauty of the farm anchor your piece.

  • Very important message. Great content. It would have been nice to see more of the community farming the land. Maybe fallow a couple of people's stories within this community farm.

  • I strongly support messages that encourage respect for people and their rights. You are covering the events of a great cause, and I hope this can help that community achieve their goals. Therefore I believe you deserve a wide audience. GL from me!

If you get a chance, please give me your feedback on my pod: ”A Humane Society”. It tries to bring more awareness about having respect for other living things. Thanks!

  • Interesting how the South Central Farm is still a cause celebre. I was at New Year's Eve party in a comfortable suburban enclave in L.A. and heard some fascinating stories of how close the Farm was to being saved. All the more tragic.

It really speaks to how important tone can be, especially in such delicate negotiations.

  • I hope my greenlight helps.. this is an old story now but it can still and should be told.. I dont think people realize what a disaster this was...

  • I watched the coverage of this last year and am happy to hear more on the topic.

This is an issue that needs to be brought to other areas as well. I would love to see a NYC farm one day for example.GL

  • This is a great pod. It gave me the chills to see the bulldozer destroying such a great community organizer. It can be trimmed down a bit, just a tiny bit though.

  • it is great to hear the stories of everyone that has lived around that area, and to see what it means to the locals. good job.
  • How can the city sale what doesn't belong to it.. They gave the space to the community!!

    Keep up the fight!

    Nice pod!

  • Another American tragedy. A follow up on the story now would be even more powerful. With so much needed in this area, and the obvious success of the farm, it is all the sadder.
  • Hi Michael. Excellent work on this important issue. This farm's ordeal should serve as a microcosmic example of our current system's inability to adapt to a changing world. Since I have no other way of contacting you, I had to do it through a comment. Hopefully you get this.

I am a producer from Vancouver BC Canada, we are in the initial phases of our feature documentary's post-production and would like to inquire about featuring your work in the film. We will be submitting this film first and foremost to Sundance in September. I won't say any more at this point, but I think you'll be very interested when we discuss the film and your potential contribution further. Please contact me at the info below and I'll give you all the information.

My email is info@dreamhousecreative.com. Company phone number is 604 738 7529 (ask for Corey). Again, apologies for the inquiry through comment board, but it was the only way.

  • Here's what is amazing to me - I had never heard about this struggle. This is the power of the independent media. Thank you for posting this video to educate the rest of us and to help us to get involved.

  • thank you for pushing the concept of a violence-free community in harmony with the earth!

  • That's what happens when the government owns property. It tries to sell it at its convenience. The community's struggle should have been, and still can be, to get a buyer to outbid the current buyer and bequeath it to those who want to use it. It seems to me the American dream is ownership, and control of property. Until you own it, you have no real control, and no right to claim it.
  • Wonderful piece. I would love to see this on current. GL
