Today's crackdown on immigration laws are a result of Americans trying to protect themselves from "outsiders". So many illegal immigrants in this country are hiding and fearing that their dreams may never come true. This is a story of one young woman who is trying to make a difference in her life. America is all she has.

  • simple and sweet... great combination
  • Great topic and a great interview. I uploaded a pod on immigrant worker's plight in post katrina new orleans, some of the same topics are covered. It is a very complex topic and as an immigrant to this country, I thank you for taking the time to explore the issue. Here is my pod:

  • Very nice. I love the simplicity. Greenlight for a gentle look at a rough subject.

  • What a poweful and moving piece. I hope that this is selected for television, the newspapers, the radio and as many web sites as possible. It may raise the awareness of the American people so that there is more positive action, a little more sensitivity and less negative judgement. Here is a young woman who sounds like a real giver with a kind heart. All she is asking for is OPPORTUNITY and she'll do the rest. Isn't this what America was built upon? At a young age she was hit by a car driven by a diplomat's son. Even though he was never charged you would think that his family would step up and do the right thing by alleviating some of the costs of the multiple surgeries. But, this family got away with it and laughing about it now not caring how they ruined this girl's life. The least this country can do is take care of her. If this video was in the media mainstream I think that it could make a big difference in America. Some of the other videos are funny, and smart, and creative, and good but this one deserves top billing.

Two thumbs up for the producer of this video. Please do more!

  • I have now watched this wonderful video for the third or fourth time. This is a moving story that should be seen by everyone. Aside from Native Americans everyone of us are in this country because some distant relative came to this country and was accepted here. They were either given an opportunity or created one for themselves and their families. Either way where would you be had your decendants been turned away? I agree wholeheartedly with NET4ME, the last person to comment, and that is "Where are our hearts and minds when it comes time for taking care of someone who is good and decent and just looking for opportunity. How can you look at a young girl of 20 and give her the name of "Illegal"? This last time I looked at this video I closed my eyes and imagined my daughter at 20. I as a parent too would have spent my last dollar to keep her alive and well no matter how many surgeries. And if I had to give her up to another country and not know where she is or how she's doing, I would only be able to hope and pray that someone or the country she's in would help to take care of her and teach her to help herself. To the producer of this video: A JOB WELL DONE!!! I hope your voice is heard!!!!!!!!!
  • This video flows like a poem, it is heartwarming and touching. You cover it all in this video, the language issue (she learned it in 5 months), her fear of being returned, dealing with discrimination, her isolation as an illegal here, and her hope for a better life. Well done. Excellent use of music throughout. Greenlighted, greenlighted, 1000x's greenlighted! -zen

  • I believe that America is all she has and we should stand up and make a difference in her life and others like her. She obviously is not interested in taking from this country, she's interested in contributing by realizing her own dreams. America should consider a young woman like this and give her real hope not the threat of fear and continued slammed doors. If we all took a minute to realize how lucky we are then maybe we can do something for this young woman who's scarred, scared and disabled. Her heart sure seems to be in the right place just like yours and mine. Great job to the creator of this video.
  • I gave you a greenlight because I love the idea of getting more voices from the "other side" of this really skewed debate about immigration. I do have one suggestion. I got that she came here because of her accident, but I wanted something more compelling about why the solution to her disability was coming here. The fodder from people who seem really against immigration is that people are just here crippling our own economy. We all know that's a really weak argument, but I also know that when you have a really compelling reason why a person is here, or what they are contributing, it strengthens the other argument that immigrants to this country are often the hardest-working and most vigilant of citizens. So that's my impression. I also wanted more video of her to offset the dark lighting. I know you have to shroud her identity, but is there video/b-roll that you shot of her walking from behind or doing anything where you could obscure her identity? When there is so much darkness for so long in a piece it could be offputting, even distracting for a viewer.

  • Great telling of her story, very nice how you're using imagery to free up the narrative. I'd actually like something different from the piano over the titles -- the notes striking with each new title comes very close to "Mickey Mousing" (using music that directly reflects onscreen action) for me. Instead, maybe some low-key music that can be played throughout, or perhaps nothing at all. Doesn't stop me from giving this a GL, though.

Side Note: Please check out my latest pod: LLOYD KAUFMAN crosses that line. Thanks!
  • I agree with Zen's comment, poetic is a great description. I'd like it more if the music was used more to draw me in, rather than highlihgt text. But without quesion, GL.

Thank you for bringing this story forward.

  • Although I sympathize with the plight of this lady & others like her, it doesnt change the fact that this is a very different society we live in after 9-11...We MUST be able to secure our borders for the simple fact that ANYONE can basically sneak in illegally - even those who aren't JUST looking for work or to improve their lives (read: terrorists & criminals...) How many DANGEROUS gang members and other derelicts have come here and are NOT positive contributing members of society? Not as many that are merely trying to feed their families, but TOO MANY even still. Immigrants that are looking to better their lives SHOULD be allowed to come here to do so, but LEGALLY. The government needs a way to keep track and document the people that are here - like they do for us LEGAL citizens. Also, LEGAL citizens should not have to pay taxes to pay for the healthcare and other costs of ILLEGAL citizens - which is what we are doing. And yes, they contribute somewhat to the economy by doing work many don't like to do, but how much MORE would they be contributing to society if they were all here LEGALLY & paying taxes?! Furthermore employers who thrive on hiring illegal workers wold be forced to pay them fair wage for their labor (if they were legally documented) - & not take advantage of them because they know they can get away with it.
It's a complex issue yes, but a common sense one as well.
  • A very beautiful way to tell such a tragic story ... Thanks.
  • This is a very compelling story, and you've shared it beautifully. I think you could make a bigger impact if you had some shots of her in her new environment. Shot from behind, you could show some slices of her new life. Beacuse her face is obscured (for obvious reasons) it's more difficult to make a connection with her. The format becomes a bit tedious when you are just cutting between her and the text/music. Overall, a touching piece. I think you could deepen the scope by showing a bit more. If you have a moment, please check out my latest pod and let me know what you think.
  • This is a sad story but i love the way it was told
  • Very nice presentation of the story. Simple, but very effective production. Thanks for bringing more awareness to such a controversial topic. GL from me. When you get a chance, give me your feedback on my pod (click on my profile name: Pantazonia).
  • Touching and real... Great job. GREENLIGHT
  • I agree with posting number 12.
Our parents and grandparents entered the country legally. Worked hard to become an American. We should tighten our boarders and deal with the illegals presently in the country.
Nameless has done a great job learning English, I respect her for that. It is just to bad the others don't follow her lead.

As I write this it is election day. If these immigrants feel strongly about coming to USA. They should feel the same about being an American and earning the ulitimate prize-the right to vote! For us Americans get out and VOTE!!!!

  • Makes you think...very nice. This issue is a very complex one. Hope this makes it to Tv. GL from me!

Check out my piece and let me know what you think: link
  • I get the sence that this lady will see her way through and make the best with her limitations. I agree with another comment made that It would have been nice to see her interacting with her new experiance. This is certainly a major issue right now. Thank you.

  • I'm sure reactions to this piece would have been much different with a vile subject .

  • good topic, but its rude to give subtitles when people are speaking english. also, your tranistion with the random musical notes were jarring.
