My family's Christmas Tree farm has been in business for 19 years. My parents, Joe and Barbara, explain the process of operating a tree farm year-round, and the reason they love to do it.

  • I liked this pod quite a bit. We've been going to the same family owned Christmas tree farm since my sweetie and I first starting living together before we tied the knot, and it's a tradition we love to do each year. This brought me back to the Christmas season 5 weeks later, we get warm mulled cider at our farm, not cocoa though. :) I think it's cool your folks use the "Charlie Brown" trees inside, that made the pod for me. The wife and I want to open a Christmas Tree farm when we retire. This showed me it'd be a lot of fun to do just that.

Good produciton values, only problem: tweak the vocals towards the end, I can't hear your Mom's vocals, and Dad's need to be balanced a little better on the sharp edits. GL!

  • Like Zen said, this brought be back to the tree farm. Although there's a lot more in terms of the mechanical stuff than I thought.

I loved the voice over, very natural, like you were talking to me. GL for sure.

  • good work, really liked the feel of this piece, and I love family business stories. one thought: i found myself being curious while watching this towards the end as to what you thought about what happens to the tree afterwards, for example, how customers can recycle it and make good use of it, rather than throwing it away after xmas. apart from being curious about it, I think that a mention of that would have also been a good nod to those that buy artificial re-usable trees. • Where are you, Pete? That this is your family's farm introduces an emotional aspect to this that you haven't seen fit to take advantage of. Add a V.O, add titles, do something to get your own feelings and perspective into this.

I'm holding off on giving this a GL, because right now it's a pleasant enough pod, but it could be much, much more.
  • Nice mini-doc/promo. Clean edits and good pacing. There were some sound issues mid-way and a few lighting mishaps inside. The Public Service Announcement text at the end wrapped it up nicely for those opposed to christmas tree farms. Are there such organizations? :)

One last comment, working with subjects whom you know well can give you insider access. This line must be walked carefully. While this subject matter is of a lighter nature, there was still potential for you to involve yourself more directly, more personally. At some point, you made a clear decision about your role in the project, what lens you were going to see the story through. Good work sticking to the same lens throughout the piece and I personally think you made the right decision. I could go on here about documentary bias and the various types of documentay (personal, explorative, informational), but you can consider those yourself. Just be prepared to defend why, with insider access, the piece was not a personal one (as this is often expected).
