Early work with sculpture and a successful entry in a high school art show led Keith to later work with sports figures that have been featured in the Boston Garden and Basketball Hall of Fame.
Keith Allen Johnson is the only professional sculptor in history to have produced life-sized busts of six United States presidents.
Keith Johnson is a leader of a new generation of realistic sculptors. He follows in the tradition of his mentors, master sculptors, Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907) and Daniel Chester French (1850-1931).

This is the second of your short films I've looked at on Keith Johnson. I think this film has a more satisfying structure and shape to it. It has more feeling and backstory.
But there is still something that confuses and frustrates me. Is Mr. Johnson an artist or a three-dimensional commercial illustrator? As much as I like to see images from the Bruins, Celtics and Red Sox (I'm from New England, too), there is a creative distinction that's blurred here. To me, an artist, even a realistic one, interprets, enhances and clarifies your experience. An illustrator provides a visual record akin to a snapshot. There's nothing wrong with being a commercial artist, but if he is, call him that. -
Why not just call him the Great American Sculptor?
Oh, I just did!
While I understand the distinction between fine art and commercial art (Keith has made a name for himself with both) I think that great art is what actually moves you. There are many artists who have great technical skill and yet remain obscure. On the other hand, there are a lot of artists who produce simple works that are popular.
One of the main purposes of this piece is to show that while modern sculpture rules the day, classical realistic sculpture isn't as prevalent as it once was. It is more difficult to produce a realistic likeness while also capturing the spirit of the individual. But we would like to see more pioneers in a revival of the classical style.-
