I go on a rant about movie trailers, and I suggest ways of improving them for all of our own goods!

Whew! That was alot to take in. I know it sucks...but a trailer that only entices is called a teaser, and nobody's gonna pay millions of bucks to tease the audience. Cut down the examples...got your point by the fifth one. Camera work makes me dizzy, but u touched a nerve with this one.
Watched the whole thing. GL. -
You hit it on the head! Ever seen the joke examples from trailer houses of older films, like "The Shining" cut to look like a feel-good family movie? It's a crime to mislead consumers and yet it's the only way Hollywood makes money off the crap it pedals these days. That's why I like documentary!

I like your newsroom headliner camera angles.

Hmm, I'd hate to think what you'd say about my film pods that use movie clips. :)
I'm a big hater of the preview style you mentioned in cinema, this is why I have no problem showing up to a film 30 minutes after it starts, since if it's a huge hollywood production, I've missed nothing - and most likely the film hasn't even started.
How about movie theaters that show COMMERCIALS before the PREVIEWS now? That drives me even crazier. I didn't pay $10 to sit in the dark to watch 10 minutes of TV show commercials, commercials for COKE, and the latest IPOD either before another 20 mins of previews for films I'll never go see (Norbert comes to mind).
Shymalan is a master of the movie trailer, but that's what a movie trailer should do, entice you to see the film, not give away the entire plot, or show the best scenes. Unbreakable. Great movie. Great DVD.
The main reason those films you mentioned as offenders show so many of the best parts of the film in their previews is because the movie is going to suck. (big time). Consider it a barometer on the suckiness scale from now on.
Not bad for a rant. Not bad at all. GL. -zen -
i am definitely with you on this topic. but i think, after all the frustration has passed, you actually know the answers to your questions "why." money drives everything - and most consumers are not as savey or wise like you. unfortunately, it stems from America's immediate satisfaction problem as well our US cinema's roots in old 1920's - 40's austrian film and their influence on us. Look at a book "Austrian Cinema" by Robert Dassanowsky. He is my adviser and good friend - you can learn a lot about how to manipulate and change (for the better) a culture if you first know where they came from. We, my friend, are direct decendents from Austrian and Central European film.

Ha! Agree and Disgree. On one side some previews are better than the movies themselves. A movie buff friend of mine said he'd almost prefer a whole movie of trailers.
But I totally agree with the misleading trailers, the wrong music scores, and showing the best and/or final parts of the movie in the trailer.
Oh, and Phantom Menace blew, definately.-

25 more points for you. Excellent work. I love the rant... I can imagine it would be all the more sweeter if done in front of a theater with random bystanders befuddled by this guy... I greenlit your video, Pete. Please do me a favor; I could really use your review... Please, take a chance at my New Hip Hop Art pod. It could use your personal videography advice and approval for TV.
Don't sleep, now... Take your Prozac. Thank you! 8') -
Well said. You have the makings of a Louis Black inside you.
I hate when all the best scenes (especially for comedies) are in the trailer. And sometimes, there are scenes in the trailer that aren't even in the movie! -
great rant... you forgot to mention how they mislead us into thinking a movie is very funny by showing us all the funny parts of a comedy. Then you go see it only to find out how lame it was, and the only funny parts in the whole movie you already saw...on the previews!
