Pac-Manhattan is a large-scale urban game that utilizes the New York City grid to recreate the 1980s video game sensation "Pac-Man." This analog version of "Pac-Man" was developed in NYU's Interactive Telecommunications graduate program. A player dressed as Pac-Man runs around the Washington Square Park area of Manhattan while attempting to collect all of the virtual "dots" that run the length of the streets. Four players dressed as the ghosts Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde will attempt to catch Pac-Man before all of the dots are collected. Using cell-phone contact, Wi-Fi internet connections, and custom software designed by the Pac-Manhattan team, Pac-Man and the ghosts are tracked from a central location and their progress broadcasted over the internet for viewers around the world.

  • This gave me a Permasmile the whole time I watched. I can only imagine how this could be replicated in other big cities, flashmob style. Donkey Kong could be a public nuisance however ;)
On a technical aside, the information graphics animations work very well and help to illustrate the logistics of the live action gameplay. I'm liking the PacCam action as well. GL!

  • What is this video doing on the watch and vote section? It's already been on the air, and the video clip even has Current TV graphics on it? It looks like someone recorded it from the TV and uploaded it.

  • Pac-Man is an awesome game. The idea of bring it to life was neat. Pac-Man and five ghosts run around in Washington Square Park would be interesting to see.
