"I never really liked fighting, but at 21 and getting very disillusioned with life, getting back into the ring seemed like the only way to try to achieve the American Dream." And a courageous effort it was. Up from obscurity to become Golden Gloves Champion knocking out all his opponents, the then 3rd ranked Cruiser-weight in the world moved up to the heavyweight division in 1990 and against all odds, to fight Evander Holyfield for the Heavyweight Championship.
When I first interviewed Seamus, I asked him to read Paul Simon's heartbreaking prose, "The Boxer", I was unprepared for what happens at the end and just grateful to have been there with my camera. This is the companion piece to "Shadow Boxer."

enter your post here Oh Sandi, I was so moved.

I've been thinking a lot about this pod...and now that I had some time to ponder over it, I finally have some feedback for you.
In the first part of Seamus reading of The Boxer, I would like to see some cut aways (maybe some slow motion profiles of the man...perhaps some from one of his fights - like from the footage you used in the beginning- or maybe a photo montage of him as a boy, etc,) and then cut back to him right before he becomes emotional. The impact may be stronger. Maybe??? I felt I needed a break from his close up after so long. Let me know if this kind of feedback is helpful or not!

Thanks for these comments, you are of course spot on in your critique. Will see if Seamus can get some stills. The community always makes my pods better, that's the reason Shadow Boxer is #1 (today) from a comment about VO which made the piece. Thank you. You know the coincidence re your wonderful pod, that Seamus has a shoe shine business right? www.theshoeshine.com

Wow! Intense! Loved the mix of boxing with such gentle celtic music. It worked well. Beautiful .

Sandi,
I have been busy editing and uploading my latest pod, but I wanted to say congrats on all of the success with this story idea. I believed in this story early on and am excited to see it air. Why is this pod not part of the original story. I really feel that if you can combine the two you will have the best possible pod. I sincerely doubt that this piece will end up on TV since you have already been picked for the other one. And personally I can't GL it because it is essentially the same story with the same character. I would work with the Current TV producer in charge of shadow boxer to help you fuse these together. Using Seamus breaking down while reading the poem ,intermixed with his fight footage and is shadow boxing...oh man, that is where it's at. Please consider this...Do not waste this new footage! Find away to add it in Shadow Boxer for TV. -
Great job, again.
I hope you get this footage to Current to use with the other piece about Seamus that was picked for TV.
Congrats! Keep 'em coming.
-
Thank you, I agree but Current doesn't. I'm just happy Shadow Boxer will be running, there is a wonderful intro I shot with Seamus, so watch the schedule. Getreel

Gave it a GL.. I think this piece is very well done! It goes to show that simplicity can really go far...commiting to the shot and letting the subject explore can have wonderful results. And that shows here. It's very moving.. I didn't expect it at all.
I did watch "Shadow Boxer" as well. I personally find this piece more moving and I think getting this one seen is just as important! Great work! -
What can I add? It's the truest reading of those classic words I've ever heard.
A real boxer.
Reading one of Simon's very best lyrics.
Bravo, Sandi. -
Well done! GL

truly incredible piece. blew me away. what a powerful reading. not sure what Current said about this, from your comment it sounds like they are only airing Shadow Boxer, but wonder if Current UK may consider this piece. they are launching in two weeks, definitely worth submitting there - try www.uk.current.com if you haven't. i wonder if they would like you to give more background so they can run it without shadow boxer though. really well-done. gl. eleni
-
Thank you Eleni. I'm told Shadow Boxer will, I guess, be on air and The Boxer on the CTV UK and Ireland site! Seamus Patrick McDonagh comes home! Thanks for your comment, it effects me the same way everytime I see it and i was THERE! Sandi

A beautiful reading ...what makes this piece move is the heart and soul Seamus put's into expressing himself ... as if the piece was written especially for him ,about him...... he express this same heart and soul everytime he entered the ring and still carries it outside the ring . . A brilliant short! Full of truth and humanity. I was very moved.

Even I am still so moved by this beaytiful piece.

Thank you all for your comments and may I say that the commentors are some of the most attractive people I have ever seen. Ha. It's been quite a ride with me and the Shadow Boxer. We're in the Dingle International Film Festival now and we were screened at the Cannes Short Film Corner and today at the Action of Film Festival in Long Beach, all in all, a pretty good return on a $10 investment. Current TV ROCKS!
-
This is the most brilliant short movie I have ever seen.
-
My God, this deserves an Academy Award. Have people not seen this pod? This aught to be broadcast everywhere, all the time!!!! C'mon, have you ever seen anything as beautiful in your life. I could watch this forever. Tell everyone about this!!. What is Seamus doing now? I read that he did an Off-Broadway play called " Kid Shamrock". Is he a big star in the US and is he coming to Ireland to do something here? I'm a fan, what else can I say. Great camera work, music and editing. The fight scene is goose pimple stuff, and then the emotional release is the most sincerely, authentic, passionate thing I've ever seen captured on film. I want more of this, especially with all sub-standard phoney stuff that I see a lot on film these days.
-
It's just the most sincere, moving and beautiful thing I've ever seen on film.
-
Absolutely beautiful!
