How did you get the rights to use this footage from a cable network?
I'm a big fan a new technology, but wonder about the slippery slope of big brother in this instance... what else can this be used for... can it filter out sounds other than your voice?
Just a thought.

The cable networks make some of their footage publicly available on the web.
The Shot Spotter mikes pick up a lot of sounds, but casual conversations would be tough.-

I'm with kDrew -- there's something unsettling about this technology. Whatever benefits may accrue, it still boils down to the government finding another way to listen in (and if it's gunshots today, what will it be tomorrow?). In that light, the upbeat narration clashes for me. This isn't gee-whiz fun stuff -- at the very least it represents a technlogy with life or death consequences and the potential for government abuse. It'd help if your narrator reflected that, and the piece at least touch on some of the controversies. It'd really help if your interviewees were asked some questions about these issues.

hmm..whys it have to be urban gunfire?? im not trying to be Dave Chappelle or anything but im saying..

Whats the point is rehashing a small part of a cable tv program, why can't you make your own footage on the subject?
-
It may not be the author's own work but I hadn't ever heard of this technology until now.
It looks like an awesome piece of technology but then it just proves that if you let so many people have guns without the proper training (No disrespect but its mainly true in the US) this sort of technology is needed.
In Switzerland, at the age of 14 I believe it is government law that all males need to complete a 2 week tour of duty in the armed forces every year which includes gun training, look how many people get killed every year over there.
Im not saying that everyone in the US is trigger happy, far from it but you have hell of a lot of people who don't actually understand what the implications are & just need some teaching that its easy to shoot first & ask questions later, but its more beneficial for the human race as a whole if people will stop & think before pulling that trigger. -
cool stuff that is all

Hi 1237 - thanks for your post. Sorry to disappoint you, but this clip is from a full half-hour program that has already aired to 4 million cable TV households in Northern California with excellent reviews.

I know that DC uses this technology. I think it has its purpose in to deploy police. It's not 'the solution' to crime in the city because it is not proactive, but it works. We still need community involvement to keep crime out of the cities.
-
seems like a police tool to aide locking up criminals. Try spending some money to solve crime and there would be no need for tools like this. Spend money on education, parks in poor areas, jobs etc...
