White Tigers "fact vs fiction"

// video added January 23, 2007 // 93 comments // // Embed video:

In this edition of specie spotlight we look at the very popular white tiger (which actually isn't a separate specie of tiger.) White tigers are produced from inbreeding and they actually weaken the captive tiger gene pool and they do nothing to help real conservation of the tiger.
For more info on this:
http://www.bigcatrescue.org...
*Please urge anyone you see exhibiting white tigers to get them fixed as we CAN stop this abuse in our generation. Since they bring in $$$, many places breed them, and this has to be stopped in order to save the real tigers. Thank you. .

    • Gee-thanks for the plug :) This white tiger issue is coming out more and more. Other places are now telling the facts about them being inbred, and not a true species of tiger. But still we see some facilities allowing them to breed to bring in the paying public.

    • It's important for everyone to know about the facts of White Tigers. If people knew then maybe people would'nt be so eager to see them in show.

yep the fonts are kind of cheesy.
But hopefully the overall message gets through.
White tigers are still very popular, and that is why people will keep breeding for them.

    • i never knew that white tigers were bad. now that i do know i wish everyone could know so we could do something about it.

They're needs to be more awareness so that hopefully, it becomes illegal to have these white tigers at zoo's and circus's.
      this has to stop.
i hate the fact that harm is being done to an animal.

more people need to see this video!

    • thanks for watching, here is some info: (Ron Tilson director of Tiger SSP)
.."However, there is an unspoken issue that shames the very integrity of zoos, their alleged conservation programs and their message to the visiting public. To produce white tigers or any other phenotypic curiosity, directors of zoos and other facilities must continuously inbreed father to daughter and father to granddaughter and so on. At issue is a contradiction of fundamental genetic principles upon which all Species Survival Plans for endangered species in captivity are based. White tigers are an aberration artificially bred and proliferated by some zoos, private breeders and a few circuses who do so for economic rather than conservation reasons." As for breeding tigers of any color, Ron Tilson says, “For private owners to say, ‘We’re saving tigers,’ is a lie,” Tilson says. “They are not saving tigers; they’re breeding them for profit.”

    • I dont think that many people at all know about this problem and zoos and other attractions exploit these animals for their own financial gain and thats not right. So this video is definitely great and should be on the air.

The video was very thorough and gave all the reasons why it's not right, so I'm not sure what else could really be added to it to make it any better.

      Excellent pod.

    • Thank you very much for such an educational pod. I learned a lot from it. I would like to congratulate the Big Cat Rescue organization for the work you do.

I'm an animal lover, and it's great to see people that are commited to provide them with well being and safe haven. I truly believe that this kind of story can make a difference (by creating awareness about a lot that is taken for granted in our world), and I would love to see it reach out to a larger audience. GL from me!

When you have a moment, please take a look at my latest pod BIG BUGS , which is also trying to convey a message of conservation and preservation of the natural world.. I would love to know what you think. Thanks!

    • It is sad what people will do sometimes.. same thing about the white Lion- this is from a recent newspaper article:
"He was believed to have the white genes and was bred to a captive female and then to one of his own daughters. A white lioness called Bella was produced as a result in 1982, which later produced many white cubs. At zoos in China, Germany, Japan, Philadelphia and Toronto are represented by this bloodline. All white lions in captivity can trace ancestry to the Timba-Bella mating."

    • The Devon Rex and Cornish Rex cats are similar I think. Completely unnatural, but the mutation is not a result of inbreeding. The mutation is only artificially selected by inbreeding. After a few generations, the gene becomes predominant in the gene pool, so almost all the offspring have the trait. Then they become pedigree. It doesn't necessarily mean that other bad genetic traits have been selected, but it does increase the risk of a bad gene becoming predominant in the species. They are usually healthy if the gene pool in the pedigree is large enough. They have to keep inbreeding them if there are only a few left. This is also a problem with endangered species I think, like the Hippo in the Congo. Only a few thousand of those, as they are being hunted. I like our classic Tabby cat. He has all the natural makings and wild instincts, and thats the way I like things. I wouldn't choose a pedigree pet, as I prefer the real thing.

    • Golden retrievers were created by line breeding too. In order for a human to be blonde it must have two recessive genes as well. The majority of white tigers offspring are perfectly healthy (like blonde children), however; I agree that breeding white tigers is not conducive to saving the species. (just as breeding golden retrievers doesn't help save the wolf)

    • Great Info. Most people do not know the price paid by the Animals seen in animal shows and circuses. We should be promoting wildlife in nature, not for the profit of Man. While rare genetic mutations are often intriguing, they should not be promoted for human entertainment. Kudos to Big Cat Rescue for their compassionate care of unwanted or 'throw-away' animals and their continuing educational efforts.

    • Thank you so much for informing myself and so many others about this terrible tragedy. In India, the white Elephant is a sacred creature which represents that a monarch is ruling with justice. In our own Native American culture, the white Buffalo is a symbol of hope and renewal for humanity. It is unfortunate that this beautiful genetic abnormality, which is revered by so many indigenous cultures, has been unjustly exploited for entertainment purposes by our own culture. Thank you for relieving me of the veil of ignorance on this cruel practice.

    • I thought I was pretty well informed, but I had no idea this was a genetic abnormality...or that white tigers were unhealthy tigers. Thank you so much for this information. It is important, and it needs to be a well known fact I hope it gets air time...and motivates some changes in the laws and protection of tigers in their natural beauty... orange and black. How sad that such majestic creatures have been genetically altered for the sake of what we think is pretty. Nature in its natural form and habitat IS true beauty, and it is declining at an unbelievable pace. We need to stop regarding nature "for our pleasure and profit", and respect and protect the earths natural habitats...perhaps if we can ever learn... we won't need rescue organizations.

However, it is sad that there is a need for places like this. People need to understand that wild animals CANNOT be tamed and they are not here for our entertainment. A white tiger means man has been involved and many, many other tigers have died to produce that one. I think this video may open peoples' eyes to what's really going on with animals for the sake of money. Bravo!

Either way, this was a good story, I always like when I learn something new about nature, and this pod acheived that nicely - plus Tigers are cool. Only thing I could see fixing is I'd work on the opening audio vocals a little bit, they are little blown out. But otherwise, this was excellent. Maybe a recompression of the video to lose the pixelization, but otherwise it was great, I greenlight. Check out my latest pod when you have 5 mins. -zen
