The Pod Shows a small portion of my life with Phyenylketonuria (PKU), a genetic disorder which, if left untreated would leave me mentally retarded. Essentially my body cannot break down phenylalanine, a specific component of protein. Because of this I must completely avoid all foods containing protein (which is basically all foods). In order to gain proper nutrients I am required to a large amount of supplements everyday of my life in place of a normal diet. The video shows the daily supplements I take, as well as presents a few issues facing the first generation of young healthy adults with PKU the world has ever known.

  • I've never heard about this so I feel like I learned something. The sequence where you're popping the pills and drinking the supplements had me hooked. Use of titles worked in some places, excessive in others, and sound issues at the interviews(I shouldn't talk) won't stop me from giving this a GL.

  • I never listened about this, very instructive.
It has some sound problems, anyhow a greenlight is deserved!
  • interesting. actually made me do a google search and learn more on pku

  • You are well on your way to becoming a very popular producer here on current TV. Keep up the good work. I think your show is good enough for television because I am a big fan of human interest stories.
    Sincerely

  • Good job. I enjoy learning new things. I think viewers would enjoy your interesting window.

  • it wasnt coffee- it was a margarita. and yes. it was VERY necessary!

  • This was shot well and delivered information in a very user friendly way. I like it, but I feel like something is missing from it, something that will help us connect or give us a more empathetic tug, something on par with the pill popping and supplement drinks.

How could you say no to something like this?

an aside: you recently left a comment on my first vid launch that rubbed me wrong and I realize that it is in part true, however I was hoping to ask for some suggestions or recommendations for improvement

    thanks and good luck

  • This is one of those pods that reinforces the idea and importance of Current TV. Does this pod have some technical problems? Yes. Does it have some audio issues? Yes. But most importantly, does it have an original story, told by an interesting character? A BIG yes. Great work. I think if you cut this down a bit and get your audio levels right, it would make a great original story. Also, the audio in the group meeting is obviously too low, I think you have to add subtitles so we can read what they are saying or cut it out altogether. Anyway, this story inspires me and at the same time makes me realize what I have and need to appreciate. Thanks. GL

  • Very interesting piece. I learned a lot, but I found myself wanting to learn more. To see more of your daily life and how this affects it. Let us see more of your life outside of just the diet, however normal or abnormal it may be. The trip to Spain was an interesting element, but again, I'd like to see more of your experience.
  • Hope this gets on tv! This is great info that the general public should learn about. Great job!
  • This should have an airing. A fascinating insight into a mostly unknown condition. You've created a great little documentary there!
  • What a great look into what PKU can really be like for an adult! I wish it was longer and explained more but still I applaud you for creating it! I like the music too! My son 9 week old son has PKU and it is reassuring to see an adult male living with PKU.
  • a fascinating pod. you've produced and edited this very well, I hope it airs soon.
    GL.

  • Vey well done. Would love to hear/read group discussion. Would also like to see what you enjoy in life - you doing it.
The formula and pills and diet must be a drag - but worth it I hope. Tell/show us what you love to do as a result of sticking to the diet - YOU are WINNER - minor revisions and I think it's ready. Viewers need to know this stuff.

  • Phil,
Thank you for sharing your story. Thank you for sharing your story w/ others who share the same story... i could take that one farther, but really, this is a very good pod that allows us to see what it is like in your world. Which is what Current is all about...

  • This subject is fascinating! I was really pulled into the story, because I didn't know this disorder even existed. GL. I just have a few comments about the structure of the pod. I’m in no way saying that this is a bad piece of work, because I think it's very powerful. But, in my humble opinion, there are a few things you could do to improve it. Number one; you missed the "e" in genetics (I'm sure you've already noticed this). Number two; the audio during the Spain sequence is inaudible (maybe the folks at current can enhance that for you). Number three; it would have been interesting to see what it's like for you at work, and around your friends. I'm sure life is very difficult for you man. Thanks for sharing your story.
  • great story...i like these types of pods because they show what it is like in another person's shoes. GL!
  • I don't know if you're aware of this, but the meter reads so far 100% YES and 0% NO. Thank you so much for opening that window of your life to us. GL!

For Current: Can you guys help this filmmaker/podmaker on those minor technical issues to make it to the tube ASAP!? Thnks.
  • Great insight into a world i knew nothing of. The scientific overview was enough info and the personal perspective brought the film alive. Good luck with getting on air. GL
  • Overall, I like this pod a lot. Thank you for opening this window to your world, as you say. Some comments: 1. Some of the title cards have misspellings, 2. I would have much prefered to hear you narrate than to read so many title cards. This is all about you and I think that would have given us a better picture of who you are.

    Great work. GL.

  • Needs some fine tuning. We see you a lot, we hear your thoughts via slates on screen a lot, but we never actually hear from you, at least not until the very end - which is what is lacking in the video to me, I'd like more of you on camera. It's definitely TV worthy with some editing and spelling corrections, reminds me of the EDS video I just did for someone. GL, but re-edit it and fix the typos and upload a new version, always spell check your slates and titles. -zen

  • I never knew about pku. I hesitated to GL because the audio needs boosting in the Spain sequence. But GL anyway!

I also agree with others that you could easily read what is on the title cards. It would be more interesting to hear your voice and this would also take care of the typos.

Increasing the audio level is easy to do. If the level was recorded low, all you have to do is duplicate the tracks in sync with one another and the sound would be more audible. Or, in Soundtrack Pro there is a filter to normalize audio that is low.

I hope this is helpful and not annoying.
  • i was unaware of pku. very educational and informative. good editing and piecing together with the subtitles and music. how great there's a conference for everyone to congregrate. i think it could be shortened a bit, too, but it is def worthy of being seen and heard. (audio was dificil sometimes!) gl from kendallfresh.
  • Thank you again for giving your thoughts, insight, and suggestions to me on how I may improve. I have just uploaded another piece for an upcoming adventure in Peru. Would you mind having a look at it to give me suggestions, input, and comments. Thank you for helping me to get the voices out to speak for those who cannot. The pod is named Journey of the Run

  • Thank you for this educational and moving pod ! I’ve learned a lot.
    Bravo !!!

  • Excellent info, Would like to hear from you personally and have a glimpse into the cost of all the supplements. Fix up the audio and typos and GO FOR IT!!!

  • Interesting! GL!
  • wow, this was really educational, good luck.
  • I agree wih others about the audio and the title cards, so I'll move on. The pacing of the beginning section is really good, and I think the pod would be stronger if you kept it to showing your routines, then ending with your comments to the camera at the end still. Your trip to Spain could be an entirely different pod, and probably should be. Edit those parts to make a piece about meeting and hearing from others in your situation. Keep working on this - it's worth it.

  • Wow, I didn't know something like PKU existed -T he line of text "This first generation to be treated is entering uncharted territory," is thought provoking. That's heavy. One of the most educational pods I've ever seen. Definite GL!

  • Wow..GL

I have been looking into what makes our foods that we eat everyday, and trying to find healthy foods without preservatives..and so on...but to only have synthetic pills...I dont even know what to say.

lets bring awareness to the pku and people with it.

  • good job
check out my pod on a photo montage artist and tell me what you think.
  • this was really educational and moving...
  • Man, once again I learn someting new by watching the pods on this site, I never knew or heard about PKU.
Work on the audio, title cards and the establishing shots of Spain, maybe cut some out to help the piece move quicker. Also, one on one interviews witht the other people who have PKU would have been a little more interesting than the clips from the meeting and also a n interview with a Doctor that specializes in this field.

  • sorry man
  • glad I watched it, never knew about PKU...GL

check out our pod if you get a chance, let us know what you think
  • Thanks for sharing. Taught me something I've never heard of. I agree with others that audio needs some tuning. It might worthwhile to try making two pods out
of this, one of your daily life, and one of the gathering in Spain. I find myself wanting to see more of how you deal with this everyday.

    Best of luck

  • You have a strong will. It's admirable! GL for sure!

If there is time take a moment to check out my Pods...
  • Great information. And good work.
    I really like the animations.

  • Gl brother!
  • The story is very serious, and I almost cried... But you didn't make it too sad, and told the story very well. Especially I loved the illustration in the beginning. In the scene of Spain, the audio was a bit too low, and difficult to understand what they were saying. Overall this is an important story, and people have to know. Greenlight.

  • One2Three7, I'll get this part out of the way. Yes your audio levels for some of the speech is too low and it gets difficult to hear what they are saying.

Other then that your pod is amazing. You have a fine tuned sense of editing, audio, and storytelling.

It is really interesting to find someone who instead profiles other people decided to profile himself and bring us into his world. I've never heard of PKU and the lack of attention to such a disorder is disturbing. This pod needs to be on TV, not only for you necessarily but for everyone who does not know.

    Great Pod, GL!

  • GL...It was a little hard to hear some of the sound in some parts, but I am sure you worked with what you had! Keep up the good work.
