A basic single transit ticket in Berlin is good for two hours of travel - meaning you can get off of the subway, tram, or bus and then get back on later if your time hasn't expired. This, coupled with the fact that most people's tickets expire while they are at their destination, even though their trip may have only taken 15 minutes have led to an underground economy of transit ticket resellers.
These resellers, who can be found at virtually every subway station in the city, often work in teams asking people exiting trains for tickets that they are no longer going to use. Then, when they see a customer approach the ticket vending machine they will approach and offer to sell a discounted ticket - usually at half price - for the trip they are about to take. The customer can check the time that the ticket was stamped for it's first use and then judge if there remains enough time to complete his or her voyage.
These transactions are, naturally, illegal, and if the sellers are caught they may be fined by the transit authority, resulting in a cat and mouse game with the sellers. The sellers themselves also have to worry about protecting their "turf" from other would be resellers. This is another reason to work in teams.
In this piece we have talked to a pair of girls who work the busy Eberswalder Station in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg district. They are both young and have dropped out of school, and make their entire living by the three hours per day they spend reselling tickets at the station. This is a way of life for many in Berlin and this short documentary aims to shine a bit of light on the occupation.

  • GL Interesting slice of life. I don't necessarily see how this is any better than a regular job. Looks tedious and boring.

    Check out Sister Beatrice Explores. Her's isn't a job it's a calling.
  • great pod wilsodj. if think if you cut about 30-50 seconds of the least relevant material, you would have this on the air. ... While / if you're still over in Europe, you should film as much culture as you can manage....even if you don't have the story yet...you never know what you might catch.....as was the case with my forthcoming pod "Subway B-boys" should be up tonight or tomorrow...I set up, shot my intro, and came up with the idea well after I shot the primary footage...peace
  • Nice one that was really good. Its a good idea good on the girls. The only thing I would have to say is try to stay a bit longer on a few of the subtitles I was having trouble finishing a few.

If you get a chance check out "Xtreme Waste"

  • Good piece, GL. I agree about the subtitles, They could have been a little longer. One comment about the music in the middle of the piece, I understand that your using what you've got, but it really took away from the German feeling. It suddenly felt like the States to me.

Here are a couple of my creations if you don't mind.

  • Great pod. I love stories having to do with the underground economy. I think it was very well edited, shot fairly well (considering the lack of light), and overall deserves a greenlight.

If you have a moment and feel like watching some current videos, check some of my stuff out. Here's a <a href=" http://www.current.tv/watch/32267305?list=newVidsByProd...
  • This is a great pod. Edited, shot, and produced wonderfully. The topic is really interesting... I think that New York City has created a law against this activity... it's such a good piece for the demo. This should be on TV!!

Please check out "SF Die In" when you get a chance: <a href=" http://www.current.com/watch/28212029">link<...
