I really liked the style of this piece, sometimes the editing got in the way of seeing his art which shouldn't happen when it's a bio of an artist, however--it was wonderfully shot, the character is endearing and has a great message. It slowed down a little when he was deconstructing "Mid-summer haze" piece, I would just put in the best part of his rant [I know it's hard to edit out great content, but it slows the whole piece down.]

Well done. I enjoyed hearing this guy talk so passionately about his work. Nice editing and music.

I've known Garibaldi for several years, and have been a fan since meeting him at Sacto "underground" art events. I'm very happy to see this feature on David, especially in such a cool place as Current.tv.
I gave this a GL, but only because I'm biased in favor of David. If I didn't know David, I wouldn't have GL'd this for a couple reasons:
Camera work is vertigo inducing.
Editing is distracting
IMHO, David's real magnet is his live show...while this is interesting for folks who already know Garibaldi, it's really his live show that's the definitive Garibaldi experience.
Thanks for producing this.-

David G. is the FUTURE and the future looks BRIGHT. Say, where did this guy come from???? Sacramento is the winner and David G. will represent..
-
The FUTURE? I wonder how Denny Dent would feel about Garibaldi doing his same act right down to the white blazer and finishing signature handprint? Of course Denny can't defend himslef since he passed away in 2004...right when Garibaldi started to take off. Coincidence? I am all in favor of artists and the creative pursuits but, imitation and artistic plagiarism is something that will always be there. Art is creation and self expression; experimentation and progression. If you are expressing yourself through someone else's imagery, personal icons and symbols- What does that say about you? Is it art? Is it right? Who decides? You have to ask yourself, as someone who has no identity- other than being someone who can emulate their idols, are you a fanboy doing "fanart"? Personally, my opinion is that it's a slap in the face if you do it more than once. It's not art and the plagiarist is just pathetic, thoughtless and lazy. Who cares if you become famous or the flavor of the month- anyone can do that. It's too damn easy to come up with a gimmick- that's what advertising and commercialism is all about. Is it art? or commodity?
Look up Denny Dent on YouTube and you may feel different about Garibaldi and his act. Just for fun, also google Justin Bua... -
When I read comments like the one below, it gives me more reason why this documentary is so important. People base their opinions on internet pictures and articles. This way, they can hear the true story, true inspiration, and true creativity, rather than assumptions.
As for the Denny Dent comments. It is no secrect that he fathered the style of performance art I do, and that there are many artist around the world carrying on this style (i.e. michael israel, jean francois, michael ostaski, brian olsen, etc.) I will continue to speak about Denny Dent as the father of it, and I am honored to carry the torch to a new generation so that they may know about his great work.
As for my studio work, yes, I would google Justin Bua, and Frank Morrison, and Ernie Barnes. It is actually derived from a style called Neo Mannerism. Google that. It's not just hip hop art, black art, or one artist's art. It is a world renowned style, and if anyone would say they started that, it would be Ernie Barnes.
I write this with the utmost respect because I understand, this person does not KNOW me. I do hope you have a chance to view the documentary, and then create your opinion from that.
I'm good with the future, because someone has to inspire it.
Peace,
Garibaldi-

Since I have been recieving comments labeling me a hater or someone who is jealous of the rhythm and hue phenomenon, I feel that I must post a response.
Ok, you bring up a good point, I dont know you. There is no way I could know what is in your mind or in your heart. But what I can do is make observations about tangible facts that I observe, rather than make assumptions from Internet articles or opinions. One cant deny that you have talent and it takes a certain resolve to perform in front of a crowd.
I am glad to see that you acknowledge Dent despite the abscene of his name on your website or myspace page. Obviously my comments about defining yourself through someone elses images didnt get through, so I will try and break it down in two ways:
1. If you and Brian Olsen are doing the same exact show, whats the difference between the two of you? Which one of you was actually a student of Dent? Art in Action vs. Rhythm and Hue? How can you be, breaking creative boundaries between studio and stage, when the boundaries have already been broken by Dent?
I know that art is not created out of thin air, each generation influences the next so the cycle can continue. But there is a difference between being influenced by someone and stealing from someone. See where I a going with this
2. Try to think of it in the following way. I was born and raised in Chicago where one of Hip Hops most talented mcs is from. He is known as Common, but I first knew of him as Common Sense. When you hear his songs, you know its him. The voice, the flow, the vocabulary, the delivery, the whole package is distinctly his. But within Common you can hear the greats like Slick Rick, Rakim, Krs-One, Chuck D, Big Daddy Kane, etc. Common listened to them, was influenced by them, and went his own direction. Follow me? So when Kanye comes onto the scene, you can hear Common in there with all the other greats, but Kanye sound likes Kanye because he went his own direction. I dont know what people in Sacramento call appropriating another mans act, but here we call that stealing or biting another mans flow. Lawyers call it copyright infringement and theft of intellectual property subject to litigation.
If it hasnt gotten through now, then I dont think it ever will. Maybe you are too busy making money or you have too many yes men around you to care. But it will catch up to you someday in the form of someone much bigger then me calling you on it. -
He is truly an amazing and talented artist. I really liked the way you put this pod together, with strong use of the production values. Great job! GL from me.
When you get a chance, please come check out and critique my art related pod BIG BUGS , and let me know what you think about this reverse perspective on the world. Thanks!-

I would be more than happy to respond......oh and by the way, I know this could be done privately, but once again, I want nothing but the truth to be told, and with truth sometimes will always come opposition. And, it won't be the last.
Question number 1:
The difference between me and Brian Olsen, and every other artist out there, until someone is inspired by me is this....No artist can seamlessly go from the studio (key word) AND the stage. Denny Dent was a successful entertainer, but never broke into the fine art world like we are. Same with Brian Olsen, and every other artist. In no way does that discount their genius. We are licensing products, publishing limited edition giclees, and more. That is what makes me my own, and not like them. The same theme of Rhythm Color Culture and Energy is there, but once again, in the studio AND the stage. The equal combination of the two. The live show is the experience of what I do in the studio. Oh and by the way, I have taken note of not mentioning Dent on my bio, and I am actually going to make sure that happens, and I thank you for bringing it up.
Question number 2:
I answered most of it in question 1, for example becoming my own by being influenced in different areas, but being successful in the studio AND the stage. In addition to that I would like to add this. The art form of an emcee requires many things, but the actual process of how it is executed is the same. We'll use a live emcee show for example. Come on stage, use a microphone, speak, rhyme, rock the crowd, off stage (there is more but that is simple for the example). A performance art show process, come on stage, music plays, paint portrait, use brushes, rock crowd leave stage. Yes, the Process is the same, but what happens on canvas and in between all that is up to the artist.
I don't expect people to get this right away. And obviously they won't. I also don't expect you to agree with me. I actually like the fact I'm being called out on it, so that I can then explain this to the world. I'm an artist, and everything I create is 100% original, and influenced by many great artists before me.
At the end of the day, I want to be successful in the studio AND the stage for one purpose. Not to glorify me, but to inspire people to live with passion and purpose. Use my art as motivation, a tool and a platform.
I really do hope you can make it to a show when I come to Chicago, there are no hard feelings, and I thank you for being bold enough to call me out, Respect!
Peace,
Garibaldi-

kinda the show"GoodTimes" behind it.definately flava full

I dug this
a couple of things, the overhead shot where the art pieces are shown and the artist mentions he dances while making his art--I would overlay a shot of him in action with the underlying audio. Second--when the artists is showing the work where in mentions the window..."the view" a close-up shot of the windows in the the painting I think would have worked better, visually--plus it would have given some variation to the shot. -
